Area Army man hurt in Afghan ambush

A Tooele County native was injured earlier this week in an ambush in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Spc. Eric Rugg was shot twice in an ambush while serving in Afghanistan Monday, which was still Sunday local time, said his mother, Ann Rugg, of Stansbury Park.

“All is well because of the great medical care he got,” she said.

Rugg was injured in one leg and his abdomen, and was operated on first at Bagram Airfield before being transferred to an Army hospital in Germany.

Ann Rugg said Eric is currently being transported to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to recover.

Rugg, who has been in the Army for about three and a half years, was deployed with the 723rd Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit. The ambush is still being investigated.
