Five Tooele County athletes finished in first place in their respective events at a mega track meet on Saturday, March 31 in Delta. About 28 high schools participated in the meet.
Tooele’s Alyssa Banks continued her dominance in hurdles with a first-place finish in the 100 hurdles and also a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles only 1/100th of second behind the first-place winner from Enterprise High School.
Stansbury’s Austin Slade won the boys 3200 meters and teammate Justin Jenkins continued to dominate in the high jump with another leap of 6 feet, 4 inches to win that event.
Tooele’s Chris Ebert continued a stellar year in track with a leap of 21 feet, 2.75 inches to win the long jump for the Buffaloes. Grantsville’s Rylie Matthews finished first in the girls javelin with a toss of 105 feet, 11 inches, Tooele’s Becca Smaellie was second and Stansbury’s Rebecca Shumway was third Stansbury finished strong as team with a second-place finish when both boys and girls events were tabulated. The Buffaloes finished ninth and the Cowboys placed 12th.
In boys competition Stansbury placed fourth, Tooele 12th and Grantsville 13th. In girls competition it was Stansbury third, Tooele fourth and Grantsville 14th.
Athletes who placed third included Jenkins in the 400, Stansbury’s Kaylen Vickers in the 300 hurdles, Stansbury’s Luke Jones in the 800, Grantsville’s Hailey Stevens in the girls high jump, Tooele’s Becca Smaellie in the girls shot put and Stansbury’s Bailey Wilson in the girls discus.
