Bou Kin Leo

Obit Bou Kin LeoOn May 16, 2023, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Bou Kin Leo, 93, passed away with her family by her side. Bou Kin was born in Taishan, Guangdong Province, Sept. 15, 1929, to Hin Leng Lao and Chun Yeng Loi. She was the second of six children. She married Guy Fay Leo on Aug. 23, 1948, and together they had four children. The family immigrated to the United States in 1966, first moving to Ogden, Utah, and later settling in Tooele, Utah, where they opened the Sun Lok Yuen Restaurant.

Together with her husband and their children, Bou Kin worked tirelessly at the restaurant, an establishment that remained open for over 45 years. Bou Kin and Guy Fay’s strong work ethic and determination are two attributes that each of their children have ingrained in them, something they, too, have passed onto their children.

In addition to being hardworking, Bou Kin was diligent, patient, and thoughtful. She was soft-spoken, always observing from a distance, and sharing her love through quiet, thoughtful gestures. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything and her greatest joy was having her family together in one place.

She had a witty sense of humor, especially true in her later years. Her children would tease her about various things and she always dead-panned with the best one-liners. In retirement, Bou Kin traveled the world with her husband, enjoyed taking walks around the neighborhood, and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her sons Eddie (Fong), Dee (Martie), Wayne (Hilda Soo), and daughter Joy (Mike Mazza); grandchildren Lillian (Brett Heidelberger), Stephen (Samantha), Brandon, Jennifer, Derek, and Vincent; great-grandchildren Zachary, Nicholas, Katherine, Layla, and Stella. She also leaves behind two brothers, a sister, and many nieces and nephews.

Bou Kin was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Guy Fay, her parents, two sisters, and her granddaughter, Kathy Pui-Kuen Leo.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the staff of Sunrise of Sandy for the wonderful care provided to Bou Kin, as well as her four companions, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Special thanks to Marian Elkins, who was by her side for over five years, always going the extra mile to make sure she was treated with dignity and respect until the very end.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St., Tooele, Utah. A viewing will be held at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11a.m. Interment will immediately follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

A live stream of the funeral will be available on Mrs. Leo’s obituary page at tatemortuary.com.
