Tooele didn’t exactly have a banner week last week.
The Buffs dropped matches to Grantsville (4-1) and Morgan (5-0) and weren’t exactly playing stellar tennis.
But after a weekend to regroup, Tooele has now battled back with a 4-1 triumph over Ben Lomond Tuesday and 3-2 victory over Bear River to chalk up a stellar week for the local net program.
The two league victories give Tooele a 7-5 dual record and 2-2 region record on the season.
The Buffs complete league play Tuesday when Tooele hits the road to Ogden to tangle with the always tough Tigers at 3:30 p.m. Tooele also hosts Cyprus Wednesday in a 3 p.m. dual.
Tooele Coach Derek Smith said his team is playing well this week after a tough two matches last week.
“We played really well against Ben Lomond,” he stated. “I was very pleased with our efforts. They came out mentally ready to compete. It was good win to break the losing streak and we needed it for confidence in league play.
“Some of the boys played great against Bear River and some of them didn’t,” he added. “The wind had an effect on all of them. Some of them were able to deal with it a lot better than others. Thankfully, we had wind screens or it wouldn’t have been playable (Wednesday). It was another big league victory for us. It was a very close match at first doubles and could have gone either way. Fortunately, we hung in there and stayed mentally tough and got the win which proved to be the difference in the match. This week we were much more focused and had confidence in our play which resulted in two wins instead of two losses like last week. Hopefully this will carry over to the Ogden match next week and into region tournament play. The boys are getting better with each match.”
Tooele 4 – Ben Lomond 1
The Buffs swept singles play and claimed first doubles as well to coast past the Scots in league play Tuesday at Ogden.
Individual results in the league match will be published in a future edition.
