Following a season in which the team placed second in the 5A Region 7, the Tooele High Buffaloes softball team is ready to make a splash in the 5A State Softball Championship.
The Buffaloes finished with a 13-9 overall record, which included a 9-3 record in its region. Having ended the 2023 campaign on a 7-3, Tooele rode a six-game winning streak through the end of April and into early May.
Kicking off this week’s super-regional series against the Timpview High Thunderbirds, Tooele will host the best-of-three series against the team that went 17-8 on the season. All three games (game three, if necessary) are to be held at Tooele High School, and the last two games will be played this Friday, May 19.
Leading the way for the Buffaloes this season has been senior center fielder Ayden Fitch. Boasting a .508 batting average, Fitch recorded 32 hits in the 21 games she’s played up to this point — including 29 RBIs and three home runs.
On the pitching end of things, Aubrie Hansen has been the Buffaloes’ ace in 2023, striking out her opponents 142 times in the 74 innings she’s pitched thus far. Hansen’s nearly 30% on-base-percentage, in addition to a nearly 15% on-base-average, will be a beneficial stat to help the rest of the team keep the opposition off the bag.
Game one of the Buffaloes-Thunderbirds series begins Thursday, with a 4 p.m. first pitch. Friday’s game(s) start at 3:30 p.m.
