Buffs belt Tigers, 16-1

Tooele made short work of region foe Ogden Thursday on the Tigers’ home field.

The Buffs pushed home three runs in the second and nine more in the third and coasted to an easy 16-1 triumph over the Tigers in Ogden.

Zach Mikesell tossed a one-hitter and struck out 10 to capture the victory while Blake Olsen pounded out three hits to ignite the Buff attack at the plate.

The victory coupled with Morgan’s victory over Grantsville pits the Trojans and Buffs into a third place tie with 3-3 records on the season.

Tooele and Grantsville were slated to meet today but inclement weather canceled the game and pushed the affair back to Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Dow James Park.

Now the Buffs and Cowboys have a few days off to prepare for tough region battles Thursday. Tooele tangles with Morgan Thursday at Dow James Park at 3:30 p.m. while Grantsville hosts Bear River the same day, also at 3:30 p.m.

A story on the game will be published in Thursday’s edition.

Bear River 16 – Tooele 6

Tooele hit the ball well last Tuesday against one of the state’s top athletes Jason Zundel.

The Buffs smacked out 11 hits against the Bear River hurler and MVP in the Region 11 affair in Tremonton. And Jace Harris pitched well in the game for the local squad as well.

Unfortunately, Tooele made too many defensive miscues to beat the league-leading Bears, especially on their home field, and the Buffs paid heavy toll with a 16-6 loss.

The Bears struck for five unearned runs in the opening two innings and the hosts took full advantage to build a lead it would not relinquish.

Tooele interim-Coach Doug Harding said the team’s defensive lapse enabled the Bears to capture a home victory.

“Basically, we hit the ball really well and Jace (Harris) pitched well enough to win the game,” he stated. “But once against our defensive mistakes lost the game for us. It is frustrating because we have the ability and talent to beat good teams but we’re making too many defensive errors.”

A story on the game will be published in Thursday’s edition.
