Football games on Friday include Stansbury at Springville, Canyon View at Tooele and Manti at Grantsville.
The Cowboys will face the strongest opponent.
The Manti Templars, coming off two consecutive 2A state championships, are as hot as a team can be. They would like nothing more than to add a third consecutive state title this year as they jump to 3A.
A few years ago, Manti was not much of a force in football. They are 24-2 in their last 26 games dating back to 2011. The Templars are 2-0 this year with wins over 4A teams Mountain View 28-10 and Provo 42-17.
Manti is so good that currently MaxPreps, a CBS.com site, has them as the favorite to win the 3A football title. Fortunately for Grantsville fans, the Cowboys are a major contender to win the title too. Grantsville ranks third in the race for the championship.
A Cowboy victory over Manti would give Grantsville the confidence and swagger to make a run at the championship.
After two weeks of games, here is the MaxPreps breakdown: 1. Manti 2. Morgan 3. Grantsville 4. Judge 5. Richfield 6. Juab 7. Emery 8. Delta 9. Union 10. North Sanpete 11. Canyon View 12. Carbon
Manti is ranked 20th overall in the state, just two notches down from 3AA’s top team Desert Hills at 18th. Juan Diego comes in at 26th and Stansbury at 28th. Grantsville is 52nd overall.
Stansbury faces a powerful foe in Springville at 36th. Tooele ranks 95th, and its opponent Canyon View is 96th. The Buffaloes certainly have a shot at breaking into the win column.
Grantsville and Stansbury are both in the race for state titles, or at least making it to the final four in their respective classifications.
In the 3AA ranks, the Stallions are ranked fourth. Here is the MaxPreps breakdown for 3AA 1. Desert Hills 2. Pine View 3. Juan Diego 4. Stansbury 5. Snow Canyon 6. Bear River 7. Dixie 8. Hurricane 9. Cedar 10. Payson 11. Unitah 12. Park City 13. Tooele 14. Ben Lomond.
Springville will be a formidable opponent for Stansbury, but Manti is the powerhouse opponent this week for local teams.
