Cowboys pound Ogden 10-0

Grantsville opened Region 11 play Wednesday with a convincing 10-0 victory at home over Ogden behind the pitching of freshman Sydney Barney and the hitting of junior Amy Matthews.

Barney allowed only two hits and struck out seven in the lopsided win while Matthews ignited the Cowboys’ offense with a two-run homer in the first inning and an RBI double to the left-center gap in the fourth inning. Laramie Paulick and Maddie Johnson also added doubles in the game for the Cowboys who collected seven hits.

Teagan Critchlow started the game with a walk, stole second and came home on Matthews’ homer over the center field fence. Paulich followed Matthews’ home run with a double that hit the fence in center field and Barney reached on a walk, but the pair were left on base and the Cowboys led 2-0 after one inning.

The Cowboys pounced on the Tigers with four runs in the second inning. Lola Williams smacked a single to score Jamie Hamby and Critchlow. Williams and Johnson later scored on Ogden throwing errors to push Grantsville’s lead to 6-0 after two innings.

Grantsville was able to get two runners on base in the third, but Ogden pitcher Chezarae Garcia was able to get out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.

A double by Matthews in the fourth scored Williams and Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0 Grantsville after four innings.

The Cowboys ended it in the fifth when Hamby scored on a throwing error and Critchlow scored on a double by Johnson. The Cowboys host Morgan on Friday and Tooele on Tuesday.
