With less than 20 minutes left in Friday’s Region 13 football game against Summit Academy, it looked like Grantsville was headed for its third consecutive loss as the visiting Bears took a 27-14 lead.
However, the Cowboys had other ideas. After Summit Academy scored on its first possession of the second half, the Bears were unable to advance past Grantsville’s 45-yard line on any of their final five drives, and Grantsville scored 31 points over its next five possessions en route to a 45-27 win.
Grantsville (5-3, 1-1 Region 13) began its comeback with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Cage Johnson with 4:33 left in the third quarter. Johnson had a 21-yard run earlier in the drive, and the Cowboys also benefited from a holding call against Summit Academy (6-2, 1-2) on third-and-4 near midfield.
Less than two minutes later, the Cowboys struck again on a 70-yard catch and run by Noah Mouritsen off a screen pass from Caleb Sullivan that gave Grantsville a 28-27 lead after Nate Wright’s point-after. After another three-and-out by the Bears, the Cowboys added to their lead, quickly moving the ball into the red zone thanks to a 26-yard pass from Sullivan to Mouritsen and a 24-yard run by Ethan Rainer. Johnson’s second TD run of the evening put GHS up 35-27 with 10:47 left in the game.
Summit Academy turned the ball over on downs at the Cowboys’ 45-yard line on its next possession, leading to Grantsville’s final touchdown. Facing third-and-14 from the Bears’ 18, Sullivan found Dillen Richardson for a 17-yard pass to extend the drive. Kaden Kelley ran it in on the next play for a 42-27 lead. Grantsville added a 40-yard field goal by Wright with 2:52 left after a Summit Academy fumble.
Grantsville led 14-7 after the first quarter, as Sullivan had a 6-yard TD run to cap the Cowboys’ first possession and Gabe Mouritsen had a 12-yard touchdown run with 3:52 left in the quarter. Summit Academy’s Titan Kilgore caught a 55-yard TD pass from Joe Garlick between Grantsville’s two scores.
Summit Academy cut the lead to 14-13 on Jaxon Case’s 16-yard TD run with 11:12 left in the second quarter, as the Bears fumbled the snap on the extra point. They took the lead on a 20-yard pass from Garlick to Kilgore with 2:58 left in the half, and added another score on a 16-yard TD reception by Kilgore with 7:46 left in the third quarter.
