Cowboys sweep to win tennis crown

Grantsville was untouchable at the Region 11 tennis tournament on Thursday and Friday on its home courts.

The Cowboys swept the competition with victories in all three singles events and both doubles categories. Grantsville finished first in team points, with Stansbury in second, Bear River third, Ben Lomond fourth and Tooele fifth.

Stansbury strolled to second place by sending its all its singles players to the region finals, along with its No. 2 doubles team.

Braden Sandberg won the title at first singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Stansbury’s Logan McBride in the final match.

Tyler Colson downed Jake Hardy 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Grantsville’s Matt Waldron defeated Dakota Fidler 6-2, 6-2 to win the championship at third singles.

Dallin Dalton and Jacob May battled past Ben Lomond’s Brian Harris and Austin Sandau 6-4, 6-1 to claim the championship at No. 1 doubles.

Lane Sutton and Tytan Thurgood beat Stanbury’s Jordan Jenkins and Alex Kimberling 6-1, 6-2 to win the No. 2 doubles title.

“We tried not to go into region over-confident. Our guys played smart and did not let their guard down,” said Grantsville coach Steve Thurgood. Hopefully, this will be a springboard into the state matches. We hope to improve on the four points we scored last year at state.”

Tooele qualified three singles players and one doubles team for this  weekend’s state tournament. Ivan Gonzales finished fourth at first singles to qualify for the state tourney, as did Jacob Vanderwerken at second singles  and Jacob Nielson at third singles.

The THS second doubles team of Josh Orton and Carsen Brewerton finished fourth and will compete at state.

McBride, Hardy and Fidler will compete for Stansbury in singles at state with their second-place finishes at region. Stansbury’s first doubles team of Carlos  Gomez and Thaddeus  Mitchell finished third at region to qualify for state.  Jenkins and Kimberling qualified for the tourney with their second-place finish in the region.

The state tournament begins on Friday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

Sandberg will face Desert Hill’s Gabe Anderson in a first-round match; Colson will start out against Cedar’s Matt Stewart; and Waldron will tangle with Miles Meacham of Morgan.

Dalton and May will battle Nate Jones and Bryce Jones of Pine View in the first round, while Sutton and Thurgood will meet up with Blake Lawrence and JD Gates of Hurricane.

Stansbury’s McBride will face Zac Coone of Cedar in the first round; Hardy will battle Tanner Jones of Richfield; and Fidler will meet up with Joseph Beales of Union.

Gomez and Mitchell will face Snow Canyon’s Logan Wrigley and Matt Morgan at first doubles. Jenkins and Kimberling will battle Jaymin Cowley and Zane Zimmer of Carbon.

The first two rounds of the tournament will be held  on Friday, with the semifinals and finals on Saturday.
