Grantsville rallied for four runs in the fourth inning, and added three more in the seventh to defeat Tooele 10-4 on Thursday at Dow James Field.
The victory gave the Cowboys an opportunity to win the Region 11 crown outright on Friday at Stansbury. The Stallions, however, defeated Grantsville 4-3 in 11 innings.
Grantsville still has a chance to win the title outright with a win at home against Ben Lomond on Tuesday and a victory over Bear River at home on Friday.
Stansbury needs to defeat Tooele, and have Bear River defeat Grantsville to tie for first. Bear River needs to beat Grantsville on Friday for a piece of the region title.
Tooele jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Justin Pollmann opened the inning with a single to right. Pollmann advanced to third on two fielder’s-choice plays, and scored on a single to right by Ryan Brady.
The Cowboys countered with a pair of runs in the third. Two walks and an infield hit loaded the bases. Dillon Hutchins hit the first of two doubles in the game to bring home Dallin Williams and Nick Arbon to make it 2-1 Grantsville.
Nick Swartzman came up with a huge hit in the bottom of the third to help Tooele take a 4-2 advantage.
With one out, Zach Jeffers was hit by a pitch and scooted to second on a single by TJ Bender. With runners at first and second, GHS attempted a double play second-to-first on a ground ball hit to third baseman Wyatt Barrus. The Cowboys got the force at second, but THS runner Tyson Vigil was safe at first. Jeffers came home on the play to tie the game at 2-2.
Pollmann walked, and then Swartzman drove the ball over right fielder’s head for a triple and two RBIs to make it 4-2 Tooele. It would be the last run of the game for Tooele.
Matt Garrard picked up the victory on the mound for the Cowboys scattering four hits.
Jonas Johnson singled to left to start the bottom of fourth, and moved over to second on sacrifice grounder by Clay Matthews. Ky Fisher singled, and Williams hit a grounder to score Johnson to cut the lead to 4-3.
Arbon knocked an infield single to put runners at the corners with Fisher on third and Arbon on first. Fisher came home when the Tooele catcher tried to throw out Arbon on a steal to second which tied the game at 4-4. Arbon later scored to make it 5-4, and Barrus scored on a double from Hutchins to make it 6-4. Hutchins’ long drive sailed over the left fielder’s head. Tooele was able to get a force out at third to stop the bleeding.
Grantsville increased the lead to 7-4 in the fifth on a single by Johnson who later scored on a passed ball.
Grantsville added three runs in the top of the seventh. Johnson knocked a another single and Christian Kelley came on to pinch run. Kelley scored on an RBI by Williams, Fisher scored on a wild pitch and Williams scored on an RBI by Hutchins. Grantsville had another run score, but it was negated when the runner missed third base.
Tooele hosts Stansbury on Tuesday, and Grantsville hosts Ben Lomond. Tooele will finish fourth in Region 11 and play at Juan Diego in the first round of the state playoffs. Region 11’s champion will host a playoff game on Saturday, May 10. Second- and third-place teams will play at a neutral site in the first round.
