Dates and notices cause some minor confusion

There has been some confusion about dates and notices so I’m hoping to straighten some of them out here:

Corrections: The deadline for registering to vote in the Primary Election is Aug. 3. To register you must come in person to the Tooele County Clerk’s office at 47 S. Main, room 318.

The Primary Election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 11.

By-Mail Ballots must be postmarked back to the county by Aug. 10. The public hearing for the proposed school board tax increase will be held Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The school board tax increase: Lark Reynolds, business administrator for Tooele County School District, provided me with this explanation for the tax increase:

The logic behind the tax increase is the school board made a decision when Superintendent Scott Rogers arrived to keep the district’s tax rate equal over the next 10 years to generate more income from the increase year to year in assessed valuations. The district has had a flat .009593 rate since 2013, and so the proposed increase this year is to keep the rate at the same .009593 rate.

Let me try to explain. This year the county’s approved tax rate for incorporated areas is .001954 and for unincorporated areas it is .002794. (The difference being the Municipal Services tax.)  The school district’s proposed tax rate is (00.9593). The difference in those rates is the increase in taxes for the school district. Clear as mud. I agree!

For a better understanding of the proposed tax rate increase, please go to the school district’s Truth in Taxation Public Hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at 92 Lodestone Way, Tooele.

Tax Notices: Each house in Tooele County must be appraised every five years. This year Grantsville City was appraised. The valuation of your home and property will be different than last year. Whether it increased in value or decreased is based on many factors.

For more information, the Tooele County Assessor’s Office is holding Town Hall Meetings on Aug. 4 and Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Grantsville City Library, 42 N. Bowery St. in Grantsville.

Marilyn Gillette is the Tooele County Clerk/Auditor
