Dugway, Wendover pick up victories

Wendover suffered its first loss of the season while still extending its record to 6-1, while Dugway suffered a seven-point loss to West Ridge Academy last week.

The Dugway Mustangs played against West Ridge on Friday and lost 60-53, despite a 27-point performance from Josh Johnson. The Mustangs outscored West Ridge 23-15 in the final quarter to cut into the lead but still fell short in the end.

Garrett Thackeray also scored in double figures with 10 points for Dugway, followed by Daniel Shephard with nine points, John Catalla with five and Ben Shepard with two points.

Dugway picked up its second win of the season thanks to a win against Pinnacle. The Mustangs put together a 40-31 victorious thanks to 12 points by Cody Sanchez.

The Mustangs now go into a hiatus during the holidays and won’t return to basketball action until Friday, Jan. 3. That night they’ll host Mount Vernon.

Wendover played in three games last week, going 2-1 with wins against Pinnacle and Milford, and a loss to Tabiona.

The Wildcats defeated Pinnacle 76-58 after trailing 22-19 in the first quarter. They put together a 15-4 run in the second quarter, followed by a 19-11 run in the third quarter to pull away for the win.

James Trujillo led the team in scoring with 20 points. Hector Duran followed him with 17, Landyn Shepherd and Cesar Contreras each scored 10, Damion Valadez scored seven, Luis Lopez six, Dallan Murphy three, Blas Aguirre two, and Jose Collazo one.

Unbeaten Tabiona gave the Wildcats their first loss in a close game 48-47 in the 1A Preview tournament in Richfield. Wendover rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing 39-31. Duran and Trujillo each scored 19 to lead the Wildcats.

Wendover wrapped up the Richfield tournament with a win against the Milford Tigers 60-50. Trujillo once again led Wendover with 18 points, followed by Landyn Shepherd with 12 and Duran with 10.

The Wildcats came back from that tournament and picked up a win against Mount Vernon on Wednesday night. They won 69-41 on the strength of 26 points by Trujillo.

Wendover has another game this week against West Ridge at 7 p.m. Friday.
