Three freshmen did most of the damage Friday afternoon as the Tooele softball team dominated Morgan 12-0 in a shortened five-inning game because of the run rule. The Buffaloes captured their second straight region victory after dropping two Region 11 contests.
Rightfielder Keyli Sorensen scored three runs, banged out two hits and added an RBI to lead the Buffaloes. Alysia Roybal, playing shortstop, scored two runs, had one hit and a walk and catcher Rylee Whitehouse worked Morgan’s pitcher, Lindsay Mahan, for two walks, scored two runs and had a single. Third baseman Whitnie Tauhuni, only a sophomore, blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning. These four underclassmen accounted for nine of the 12 runs scored.
In the opening inning, centerfielder Hadli Sorensen was safe on an error. She stole two bases and scored on a sacrifice fly by pitcher Kirsten Zander to score the game’s first run. In the second, Whitehouse walked and left fielder Brooke Slade laid down a perfect bunt single. After Keyli Sorensen was hit by a pitch, Cassie Timothy was safe on an error and Whitehouse scored.
Second baseman Darian Rael hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Slade and Hadli Sorensen crossed the plate on a Morgan error.
Tooele scored four times in the fourth when Roybal, Tauhuni and Whitehouse all worked Mahan for walks to load the bases with no outs. Slade smacked a sacrifice fly to left to score Roybal and Tauhuni scored on a passed ball. Keyli Sorensen singled in Whitehouse and then scored on another passed ball.
Four hits in the fourth inning accounted for Tooele’s final runs. Roybal singled and scored on Tauhuni’s big blast over the left field fence. Slade was safe on an error, followed by a Keyli Sorensen single. Slade raced home on a passed ball and Sorensen scored on a Morgan error.
Tooele pitcher Kirsten Zander held the Morgan Trojans scoreless, striking out three batters in the fifth inning to end the game. She gave up only two singles. Third baseman Tauhuni made some great stops at third base, with five plays to first for outs. Tooele battles Stansbury tonight in a tough county contest.
With spring break this week, Tooele won’t play again until Wednesday, April 11 when they host Ben Lomond. They will also host Region 11 leader Bear River on Friday, April 13. Both games will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Deseret Peak Complex.
