GHS still unbeaten in region matches after win over SHS

Grantsville won three of four three-set matches Tuesday at home to defeat rival Stansbury 4-1.

On Wednesday, the Cowboys defeated Bear River 4-1 to remain undefeated in Region 11 dual matches and set up a battle at Ogden on Tuesday for the regular season championship.

The Region 11 tournament is scheduled for May 9-10 at a location to be determined with the 3A state tournament scheduled May 17-18 in St. George.

The Stallions gave Grantsville all it could handle, but picked up only one win at second singles.

Stansbury’s Logan McBride started fast with a 6-2 opening set victory over Grantsville’s Tyler Colson, but Colson came back to beat McBride 3-6 in the second set to set up a winner-takes-all third set. McBride hung on to claim Stansbury’s lone victory for the day with a 7-5 win in the final set.

Grantsville’s No.1 singles player Braden Sandberg was the first off the courts Tuesday after defeating Stansbury’s Colton Christiansen 6-1, 7-5.

The Cowboys finished out strong in the other three matches after losing second sets.

Grantsville’s Devin Orgill cruised in his opening set versus Stansbury’s Jake Hardy with a 6-1 victory. Hardy battled back to win the second set 4-6 to push the match to three sets. Hardy appeared to be on his way to victory with a three-game lead in the third set, but Orgill fought his way back to win the third set and the match 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Grantsville’s doubles teams found rhythm in the third sets after losing second sets.

Tanner Elsholz and Jacob May defeated Carlos Gomez and Jake Harris 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at first doubles. Lane Sutton and Dallin Dalton defeated Jordan Jenkins and Alex Kimbering 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at second doubles.

McBride won his second three-set match in two days with the victory over Grantsville. On Monday, he won at Ogden 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“Logan has stayed steady and strong. Competing at all costs and working hard each and every day,” said Stansbury coach Jacob Jones. “It was a second great match for him in two days.”

Ogden edged Stansbury 3-2 on Monday with Hardy picking up a 7-6, 6-2 victory at third singles. Christiansen lost 1-6, 3-6 at first singles with Gomez and Harris losing 2-6, 5-7 at first doubles. Fidler and Jenkins lost to the Tigers at second doubles 3-6, 1-6.

The Stallions wrap up the regular season Tuesday at Ben Lomond.

Grantsville had little trouble with Bear River on Wednesday. Sandberg won 6-0, 6-0; Colson won 6-1, 6-2; and Orgil won 6-0, 6-0. The lone setback came at first doubles with Grantsville losing 4-6, 5-7. The second doubles team of Matt Waldron and Dallin Dalton won 6-1, 6-1.
