GHS wrestlers victorious in season openers

Both the boys and girls wrestling teams from Grantsville opened their seasons with wins over visiting Cedar Valley on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. The girls earned a 48-18 victory while the boys prevailed 41-39.

GHS Girls Results: In their opener, the GHS girls’ team demonstrated the benefit of a large team as they earned the win over Cedar Valley who only brought five wrestlers. The Cowboy seniors, Hailey Workman (155) and Hannah Broderick (170), both earned pins in their matches. At 115 pounds, Reagan Pitt fell by pin. Sophia Calchera, wrestling 120 pounds, and Emma Quigley, at 135 pounds, were also pinned. Grantsville earned 36 points in forfeit victories to claim the match.

Coach Matt Mecham commented, “We knew that superior numbers could be an advantage for us going into the season. It will help to have a big team in competitions because we can get the points. The girls went out and did a great job for their first dual.”

“I’m proud of the progress we are making in the practice room,” he added. “We have two one-day tournaments this weekend, and it will be a great opportunity for the girls to all get more experience. We’ll head to Westlake on Friday and American Preparatory Academy on Saturday. We are hoping to get all of our girls a lot of matches.”

GHS Boys’ Results: The Grantsville boys wrestling team built an early lead in their opening match against visiting Cedar Valley Aviators and were able to hang on for the 41-39 win. The dual featured several pins by both teams, three forfeits, a tech fall and one match that was decided by decision. Seniors Kole Johnson (120), Lance Pitt (126), and Grant Rounds (175) as well as sophomore Payton Yates (144) all pinned their opponents in the victory. Junior Ethan Rainer (165) added a tech fall.

Coach Jake Phillips noted, “We wrestled well in our first dual. Coming away with a win without our full lineup against a 5A team was a great start to the season. Kole Johnson and Grant Rounds performed as expected, both winning by pin. Ethan Rainer followed suit with a Tech Fall. Lance Pitt and Payton Yates had a great showing in the varsity line up both finishing the dual with pins.”

“We had a couple of close matches that Cedar Valley was able to capitalize on our mistakes that cost us to lose matches,” Phillips added. “Our JV wrestled tough as well. Seniors Joey Scorsone and Carson Hurst came away with wins. Both of these wrestlers are going to have an impact for us at 175 this year. Our young kids battled as well. We had freshman Koen Weise and sophomores Nathan Hawke and Ryan Tracy all win matches on the day.”

“I like the direction the team is going, and we will be tested this week with 6A Granger and the SkyHawk Showdown this weekend. We need to keep improving and getting better every day.

The crowd was electric for this dual. It was amazing to see how much support we had and how loud the gym was. It definitely set a great tone for the start of the season and gives us momentum going into this week.”
