Grantsville edges Logan 3-2 in tennis match

The Grantsville boys tennis team came up with a big win Wednesday at Logan.

The Cowboys defeated the Grizzlies 3-2 after losing to Logan 0-5 last season.

Grantsville picked up wins at second singles, third singles and second doubles. All the matches ended in straight sets with no split-set matches.

Tyler Colson won at second singles 6-2, 7-5. Matt Waldron blasted his way to a 6-1 win in the first set at third singles, and then his opponent retired with an injury to give Grantsville the win.

Lane Sutton and Tytan Thurgood breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second doubles.

Grantsville’s top singles player Braden Sandberg lost 6-7, 3-6. The No. 1 doubles team of Jacob May and Dallin Dalton lost 3-6, 5-7.

Grantsville defeated Ben Lomond at home on Tuesday 4-1. Sandberg won his match 6-0, 6-1. Colson won 6-1, 6-0 and Waldron won 6-1, 6-1.

Dalton and May lost in a three-setter 6-2, 2-6, 5-7. Sutton and Thurgood won 6-0, 6-0.

Last Friday and Saturday Grantsville competed in St. George against strong competition. The Cowboys sent two teams to the tournament.

Grantsville’s first team finished sixth with 27 points, and the second team finished in a tie with Salem Hills for  seventh with 39 points. Twelve teams competed in the two-day tennis fest with Spanish Fork in first with 13 points, followed by Dixie 15, Desert Hills 17, Davis 19, Springville 26, Grantsville 1 – 27, Grantsville 2 – 39, Salem Hills 39, Waterford 43, Cedar 45, Davis 2 – 49 and Tooele 58.

Sandberg finished the weekend with a 3-2 record, Colson 2-3, Waldron 4-1, May and Dalton 1-4 and Sutton and Thurgood 3-2

Grantsville’s No. 2 team consisted of singles players Jeff Tucket, Nathan Krogh and Skyler Snarr. The two doubles teams were Isaac Hamm and Nate Beckett; and Hunter Anderson and Tyler Orgill.

The doubles teams came through with strong finishes, which shows tremendous depth for the GHS tennis program. Hamm and Beckett finished with a 4-1 record at first doubles, and Anderson and Orgill finished 3-2.

Tucket, Krogh and Snarr all finished with 1-4 records.

Grantsville will host Bear River on Tuesday, and Stansbury on Thursday.
