Grantsville’s cross country team had a successful Region 13 race at Wheeler Farm in Murray on Wednesday, with the GHS girls finishing second and the boys coming in third.
The girls team posted a score of 48 points, 25 points behind first-place Morgan and 22 ahead of host school Judge Memorial. Providence Hall was fourth with 111 points and Summit Academy was fifth with 137.
Ellie Lowery finished second overall in 20 minutes, 20 seconds, just two seconds off the pace set by winner Ella Stevenson of Morgan. Bethany Swallom was sixth in 21:59, and Erin Petersen was 13th in 23:33. Patience Garcia (14th, 23:43) and Reagan Wexels (17th, 24:06) also figured in the scoring for the Cowboys.
Other runners for Grantsville included Acelyn Fuentes (23rd, 25:31), Aliyah Fuentes (26th, 26:06), Jade Garcia (27th, 26:22), Jessica Adams (31st, 26:58), Challis Anderson (42nd, 29:00) and Abigail Swallom (43rd, 29:12).
Grantsville’s boys finished their race with 73 points, 19 behind runner-up Morgan and 32 ahead of fourth-place Providence Hall. Judge Memorial dominated the race with 18 points, while South Summit was fifth with 149.
Connor Paxman was Grantsville’s top male finisher, crossing the line 10th overall in 18:45. John Ussing was 14th in 18:57, with Evan Thomas 15th in 19:04 and Zack Hale 18th in 19:11. Blake Bunderson was 24th overall in 19:31 to round out the scoring.
James Limburg was 30th in 19:46 and David Cowdell was 32nd in 19:55 for the Cowboys. Others who represented GHS in Wednesday’s race included: Caleb Keller (40th, 20:26), Ross Richardson (41st, 20:27), Brock Merrill (42nd, 20:28), Dustin Carter (43rd, 20:28), Luke Ussing (47th, 20:36), Jacob Passey (51st, 20:53), Bryson Bowers (56th, 21:05), Gabe Hill (59th, 21:33), Kagun Favero (65th, 22:19), Zach Petersen (66th, 22:20), Matthew Buchanan (72nd, 22:52), Asher Simonds (73rd, 23:10), Alex Mecham (74th, 23:18), Carson Hurst (78th, 23:34), Eric Jex (86th, 24:43), Nicholas Redmond (92nd, 26:25) and Hayden Warner (95th, 34:19).
Grantsville will return to Salt Lake County on Wednesday to take part in a pre-region meet at the Cottonwood Complex in Millcreek.
Top of Utah Invitational
The Tooele cross country team competed at the Top of Utah Invitational on Friday at the Weber County Fairgrounds, with the boys team finishing fourth in the Class 4A varsity division and the girls finishing fifth.
The boys finished with 84 points, five points better than fifth-place Sky View and 13 points behind third-place Mountain Crest. Bear River won the team title with 32 points, followed by Green Canyon in second with 65.
K Stoddard led the Buffaloes’ effort, finishing seventh in 17 minutes, 29.4 seconds. He was followed by Joel Brown (17th, 18:04.1), Parker Hansen (18th, 18:05.0) and Garrett Palmer (19th, 18:07.0), with Joseph Wilkins (23rd, 18:25.9) rounding out the scoring. Garrett Lawton (29th, 18:52.9) and Lincoln Kenison (33rd, 19:59.1) also competed for Tooele.
The THS girls finished with 106 points, 20 points behind fourth-place Sky View. Bear River scored 40 points to edge Mountain Crest by two, with Green Canyon third.
Jennifer Thomas finished 11th overall for the Buffs, crossing the finish line in 21:52.3. Holly Johansen was 17th in 22:11.9. Grace Jenkins (23rd, 23:03.8), Keira Stewart (26th, 23:36.2) and Hannah Prusse (29th, 24:00.0) were Tooele’s other scoring runners, with Lorayna Howard (30th, 24:18.9) and Abby Jenkins (31st, 24:41.2) not far behind.
Tooele will serve as the host school for Wednesday’s Region 10 cross country meet in Settlement Canyon.
