Stansbury’s Braydon Griffith entered the 2020 season as one of the favorites to contend for the Class 4A individual state boys golf championship this fall, and through the first two matches of the Region 10 season, he has done nothing but strengthen his case.
On Monday, Griffith ran away with his second Region 10 match win in less than a week, posting a score of 2-under par 68 to beat Tooele’s Cache Holmes by five strokes. Griffith’s round was also key to Stansbury’s seven-stroke margin of victory over second-place Cedar Valley and Uintah, as the Stallions placed five golfers in the top-15 overall.
Coy Bingham shot an 82 to finish 11th, with teammate Kimball Thorpe a shot behind in a tie for 12th. Joseph Luke and Cooper Jones each shot 84 to tie for 15th, giving Stansbury a team score of 317. Ty Taylor (88, tied for 24th), Brock Shepherd (91, tied for 33rd) and Logan Richins (99, tied for 46th) also competed for the Stallions.
Tooele finished with a score of 333, nine strokes behind Cedar Valley and Uintah. Landon Buell tied for 12th with an 83, with Jaxon Hunt (88, tied for 24th) and Hunter McPhie (89, tied for 27th) also figuring in the team score for the Buffaloes. AJ Griffith (91, tied for 33rd), Jake Hervat (95, tied for 39th), Ethan Garcia (99, tied for 46th) and Kaden Wiseman (123, 55th) rounded out the Buffs’ effort.
Juan Diego finished fifth with a team score of 337, followed by Ogden (346) and Ben Lomond (348). Cedar Valley’s Tristan McKinney (74, third) and Landon Dunn (78, tied for sixth), Uintah’s Ethan Young (77, fifth) and Kamon Anderson (78, tied for sixth), Ben Lomond’s Garren Gooda (79, tied for ninth) and Javen Richins (79, tied for ninth) and Ogden’s Coltin Powell (78, tied for sixth) rounded out the top-10.
The teams played again Tuesday morning at Mt. Ogden Golf Course, with results unavailable at press time. The next Region 10 match is scheduled for Aug. 18 at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele, with players teeing off at 9 a.m.
