A 20-year-old man from Guatemala was killed when he was run over Sunday night in Tooele by a 70-year-old woman.
Diego Garcia was run over by a Honda Accord driven by the woman as she was turning onto Vine Street from Pinehurst Avenue a little before 8 p.m., according to Lt. Adrian Day of the Tooele City Police Department. The woman, who was accelerating slowly after stopping at the intersection, apparently did not see Garcia until stopping to see what she had just run over.
Lt. Paul Wimmer of the Tooele City Police Department said Garcia was apparently lying in the road wearing dark clothing at the dimly lit intersection, although a bicycle found nearby had originally lead police to believe he had been hit while riding.
“The early indicators are that he was, for some reason or another, laying down when he got run over, so at this point we do believe he was alive prior to being run over, but the reason he was in the street is still under investigation,” Wimmer said.
A full report from the state medical examiner’s office on an autopsy of Garcia conducted yesterday has not yet been completed, Wimmer said, but early indicators are that Garcia was killed by being run over by a vehicle.
Garcia was a native of Guatemala, where his family still lives, but was in Tooele for work.
Wimmer said the investigation into the incident has not yet been thoroughly completed, but the circumstances do not appear to merit punishing the driver.
“Given the circumstances, I don’t think there was a way she could have seen him, especially with the way he was lying in the road and wearing dark clothing,” Wimmer said. “I don’t anticipate she will be cited.”
