Hikers rescued off Cedar Mountains

A West Jordan couple was rescued from the Cedar Mountains early Sunday morning after an ill-planned camping trip.

Lt. Travis Scharmann of the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office, said the man and woman, in their early 20s, went to the Cedar Mountains near Hasting’s Pass Friday evening to camp and then hike in the area the next day. However, he said, they had not brought enough supplies.

“They got up there and didn’t pack enough water and got dehydrated,” he said.

The pair did have a cell phone, so they called Tooele County Dispatch Saturday when the woman became ill, Scharmann said. By Saturday night the man was also ill, and neither could get down from the mountain. Because of their location and condition, air support was called in, he said.

“We had to call in a [Utah] Highway Patrol helicopter to come in and transport them off the mountain,” said Scharmann.

Scharmann said the two were transported to Mountain West Medical Center for treatment.
