The speaker of the Utah House of Representatives is coming to Tooele for a town hall meeting.
Speaker Rep. Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, will join Reps. Doug Sagers, R-Tooele, and Merrill Nelson, R-Granstville, for a town hall meeting Thursday evening.
“The members of the House are holding town hall meetings prior to the 2014 legislative session to hear from constituents and listen to their concerns before we start the new session,” said Sagers.
The theme for the night is “Conversations with The Utah House,” and the email announcement of the meeting produced by Lockhart reads: “We’d love to meet with you and share our insights on important issues facing our state. Most of all we’d love to hear your thoughts on the economy, education, federal lands, the budget, and more.”
Sagers can’t recall the last time a sitting speaker of the house visited Tooele County for a town hall meeting.
“I think it is significant that the speaker is coming out here to Tooele County,” he said. “Tooele is no more a forgotten county lumped in with the Wasatch front in the minds of legislative leadership.”
Lockhart was elected Speaker of the House in 2011 and re-elected in 2012. She is a registered nurse and has served in the House since 1999.
The format for the meeting will largely be open microphone time to allow opportunity for comments and questions from the audience, said Sagers.
The meeting is on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Tooele Applied Technology College in room 117 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Refreshments will be served.
