It’s not over ’til it’s over

It has been my privilege to witness many high school contests over the past 20 years and I have seen complete stupidity twice. The first time was in 1996 in the 2-A state football championship game when the players from Morgan came out onto the field in their gold-painted shoes. They were so confident that they were going to win that they painted their shoes gold. If there was not already enough motivation for Grantsville, that provided the extra incentive which resulted in a 7-0 victory for the Cowboys from Grantsville.

The second time was Friday night at the 3-A basketball semi-final game between Tooele and Snow Canyon. Snow Canyon easily got the opening tip and went down for an uncontested lay-up to make the score 2-0 for Snow Canyon. An obviously preplanned chant began in the student section for Snow Canyon, “It’s all over, it’s all over.” At the time, I thought to myself, how stupid can they be? I hope that it will come back to bite them. And it did.

My sincere congratulations to the Tooele Buffalos on a great tournament. You have made all of Tooele County proud. You proved once again that basketball truly is a team sport and can now relish the fruits of your hard work. I am sure that Snow Canyon and Wasatch are still wondering what hit them. It was fun to be there to watch. Thank you for making it so enjoyable.

P.S. Tell your cheerleaders that they missed a great tournament.
