J. Michael Call

Obit J. Michael CallJames Michael Call (a.k.a. Mike, Jimmy or Mikey) passed away on November 25th in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, doing what gave him great happiness and comfort, swimming with sea turtles and enjoying the beauty of one of his favorite beaches. He was 52 years old. Mike was born in Palo Alto, California to John Reed and Ferl Rose Barker Call and moved with the family shortly thereafter to Holladay, Utah. Mike attended Skyline High School and graduated from BYU, where he studied journalism. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in London, England. Michael also lived in Idaho and New York City. Most recently, Mike worked as a page designer and copy editor for West Hawaii Today. He previously worked as a reporter and/or editor for the Ogden Standard Examiner, Tooele Transcript Bulletin, Burley South Idaho Press and Provo Daily Herald. As Mike described it, his diverse beat included “writing stories on agriculture, education, crime, chemical weapons, books, theatre and Carol Channing.” Mike was a huge musical theatre fan and especially loved working as a drama critic. He was deeply involved with the theatre communities wherever he lived. Mike was incredibly creative and playful, and kept us laughing with his unrivaled sense of humor. He received numerous awards for his writing and also co-wrote two stage musicals, “Power in His Touch” and “Harriet.” He was able to see a lifelong dream come true this past summer when “Harriet” was performed by a Broadway cast on 42nd street as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Mike led a life without guile and always showed great love, kindness and compassion to everyone he met. He had a particularly gentle soul and was thoroughly devoted to his family and friends. He was passionate and caring and taught those around him how to love unconditionally. We are thankful for him and richer for having had him in our lives. Although our hearts are broken, Mike is in a happier place and in the best hands possible. To our loving son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, we echo the sentiments of Glinda and Elphaba: “because we knew you, we have been changed for good.” We can’t wait to see you again, Mikey, but until then, keep enjoying those beautiful sunsets and break a leg on your new adventure. We will always love you! Mike is survived by his parents John Reed & Ferl Rose Barker Call, five brothers Kevin (Janice), John, Frank (Erin), Ken (Debi), Keith (Stephanie), sister Colette (Jonathan), numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S. 2300 East, where friends may visit with the family prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Messages to the family can be posted at: www.HolbrookMortuary.com. In lieu of flowers, please get tickets to your favorite musical theatre production. Mike will be with you in spirit.
