Juan Diego continued its perfect season Friday, this time at the expense of the Tooele Buffaloes 49-6.
The closest the Buffs came to scratching into Juan Diego’s lead came at the beginning of the second quarter. The Soaring Eagle already led 7-0, but the Buffs drove down the field.
Toward the end of the first quarter, a pass interference penalty on Juan Diego moved the Buffs to the 24-yard line, which put them in striking distance to knot the game at 7. Jake Brady dropped back to pass and hit Damon Fisk on a fade route that put the Buffs at the Soaring Eagle 1-yard line to end the first quarter. However, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Buffs moved the ball back.
At the start of the second quarter, the Buffs eventually had to settle for a field goal. They lined up, but Nathan Fisk’s field goal clanked off the post, giving the ball to Juan Diego at the 20-yard line.
Juan Diego struck immediately with an 80-yard touchdown to go up 14-0. And it never looked back. Juan Diego scored two more times before halftime, going into the break with a 28-0 lead.
The mistakes for Tooele carried over into the third quarter on defense. The Buffs were called offsides twice before a play from scrimmage was ever run in the third, and the Soaring Eagle took advantage with a 64-yard touchdown run when the ball was finally snapped.
The Buffs’ defense looked to finally get things together when it forced two Juan Diego turnovers on back-to-back drives, but the Buffs’ offense turned the ball over on downs on one possession and then went three-and-out on the next possession. Juan Diego scored after the three-and-out to take a 42-0 lead.
The Juan Diego defense was called for roughing the passer late in the third quarter when it hit Jake Brady, but the offense couldn’t put the ball in the end zone after moving into Juan Diego territory and was forced to punt. The Soaring Eagle scored one last time with 3:12 to go in the game for a 49-0 lead, but that led to Tooele’s first and only points.
Tooele’s Alen Sneed and Hunter Naylor put together long runs that helped the Buffs move down inside the Soaring Eagle 5-yard line. Naylor finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run and 14 seconds remaining on the clock. The extra point was missed.
Tooele will try to pick up its first region win of the season when it plays at Stansbury Friday.
