Stansbury had an outside chance of tying the third-best record in Region 11 with Ogden and Bear River at 6-6 with a victory over region-leading and undefeated Morgan.
Turns out that it was no accident that Morgan breezed through region undefeated as the Trojans turned away every run that Stansbury had in them and improved their record to 12-0 in Region 11 with a 71-54 victory in Stansbury Park.
Stone Tia had a solid game for Stansbury with 13 points in the first three quarters but was held scoreless in the final period. Ryan Robbins also reached double figures with 12 and Kirby Harris pitched in 11 in the loss. Jake Miles hurt Stansbury with his long-range shooting as he led all scorers with 18 points with three 3-pointers in the victory.
Boston Saunders helped Morgan jump out to a 6-2 lead early after consecutive baskets but Harris helped to keep it close with a 3-pointer at the 5:23 mark that brought Stansbury within 6-5.
Fueled by six points from Colby Skinner, Morgan built a 10-3 run as Christian Wiscombe capped the run with a jump shot near the foul line with 1:55 left in the first to give Morgan a 16-8 lead.
A layup by Wyatt Branch and a 3 by Robbins helped soften the blow of the run for Stansbury but a 3-pointer by Saunders in the closing seconds gave the visiting Trojans a 19-13 lead after one.
Morgan came out in the second scoring the first seven points of the quarter to build a 26-13 lead but Stansbury fought back with an 8-3 run of their own. Tia capped the Stallion run with a bucket in the paint with 2:20 left to get Stansbury within 29-21.
Saunders again added three points just before the buzzer, this time with a 3-point play that gave Morgan a 32-21 lead at the break.
Stansbury and Morgan battled back and forth in an offensive third quarter as Tia did most of his damage in the quarter. Tia scored nine points to help the Stallions keep up with Morgan. Unfortunately, Stansbury had a hard time stopping Morgan as the Trojans closed the third on a 10-3 run that gave them a 53-36 lead heading into the fourth.
With the shooting of Brek Bentley, who hit two 3-pointers, Stansbury fought back to put a little scare in Morgan. Bentley’s back-to-back triples fueled a 10-0 Stansbury run that got the Stallions within nine points. Following a jumper by Niko Chacon, Stansbury pulled within 55-46 with 4:21 left in the game.
Morgan did answer back with a 9-2 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by Miles and a basket in the post by Saunders to build the Trojan lead up to 64-48 with 2:05 left.
From there, the closest Stansbury would get would be 14 points as Morgan cruised to the 17-point victory and cap their perfect run through Region 11.
