Editor’s note: “A Better Life” is a new weekly column by the USU Extension – Tooele Office that will focus on a variety of topics intended to enhance quality of life.
Believe it or not: it can be fun to work together as a family to save money. Kids of all ages can help. Parents can teach children important budgeting practices while empowering children in helping save money toward something like the next family vacation.
Utah State University Extension is offering an enjoyable way to work together to meet family financial goals — the 2019 Tooele County Family Finance Challenge.
To join the Family Finance Challenge, each family will set a finance goal, attend fun activities, join the Facebook group and report how they are doing meeting goals during the 12- week program. Each family will be required to join the closed Fakebook group to be part of the challenge. Posts cannot be viewed outside of the group.
Enjoy a free family activity and start the Family Finance Challenge on Friday, March 1, from 7-8 p.m. at 151 N. Main St., Tooele. Kids will play fun, money-themed games and make a piggy bank while parents will share ideas and learn more about budgeting. As a family, set a goal to work on throughout March and April.
Please register by noon, Thursday, Feb. 28, by texting to Darlene at 435-840-4404 or send email to: email@example.com and report how many people in your family will attend. If you can’t attend the March 1 kickoff event, you and your family can still be part of the challenge. When you register by text or email, specify you can’t attend the kickoff but want to sign up for the challenge.
During the challenge, each family will earn points to win prizes such as groceries, movie tickets, piggy banks and more. Families who earn 35 points or higher will receive a $50 grocery shopping trip! A list of the points that can be earned can be found at extension.usu.edu/tooele. Click on the Family Finance Challenge image and the points page will pop up. Funds for the Tooele County Family Finance Challenge are being provided by America Saves grant funding.
The Tooele County Family Finance Challenge is part of the larger America Saves campaign. You can take the America Saves Pledge to help you reach your goals. Visit americasaves.org to take the pledge. You will identify a savings goal (such as a rainy day fund or retirement), an amount to save per month, and the number of months you will save that amount. In other words, you make a basic savings plan.
Sometimes it takes more than simply signing up to help you make your financial goal. That’s why America Saves offers an incentive: the annual #ImSavingForSweepstakes. Savers who create a savings plan and share their goal or savings story on social media have a chance to win up to $750. For a chance to win $500 visit americasaves.org and take the America Saves pledge. You will enter what you are saving money for and make a simple plan to reach it.
For a chance to win $750 do the above things and then share your tip, story, video or photo featuring your savings goal and then answer at least one of these questions: What are you saving for? What is your savings story and how can it help other people? What is your favorite savings tip or trick? Post it on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with the hashtag #ImSavingForSweepstakes.
Remember: Working together as a family to save money can be fun and helpful to reach family financial goals. For more tips and specific suggestions, visit livewellutah.org. Click on “Home and Family” at the top of the screen and then “Finances.”
