The Guest Opinion by Thomas Knapp, “SCOTUS rules for free speech, while upholding slavery,” Tooele Transcript Bulletin, July 5, is an embarrassment to our community.
His argument that laws banning discrimination in public accommodations is equivalent to slavery reflects a complete ignorance of what real slavery represents. Being “forced” to accept payment for services rendered to someone a business owner chooses to hate based on the color of their skin or any other factor cannot be compared in any way to the kidnapping, trafficking, ownership and brutal mistreatment of human beings that is true slavery.
The Transcript Bulletin, its owners, editors and staff owe an apology for spreading such hateful ignorance.
