The Grantsville volleyball team lost to Payson Thursday, but it finally won its first set of the season.
The Cowboys came through with a 27-25 win in the first set of Thursday’s contest before losing the next three.
Payson jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first set before the Cowboys rallied. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Sandberg smacked the ball hard for a kill that made the score 15-5. Sandberg followed that kill up with two aces on the serve, closing the gap to 15-9.
With the score at 16-10 following an out-of-bounds serve on Payson, junior middle blocker Kim Brown served the ball, and Payson failed to get it back over the net. Payson then hit the ball too far out-of-bounds and then into its own net, which led to Sandberg scoring back-to-back kills. That made the score 18-16.
Payson scored three straight points, and Sandberg scored another kill, followed by Payson hitting the ball into the net. With the score at 23-21 in favor of Payson, Sandberg delivered an accurate kill to the sideline that touched the line. Grantsville then tied the set at 23.
Grantsville took the lead on a serve from junior defensive specialist Alivia McCluskey, making the score 25-24. Payson evened the score, but Brown got it right back on her serve. Payson didn’t get the ball back over, and then it hit the ball out to give Grantsville the 27-25.
But the Payson Lions went to work in the second set, earning the first of three straight victories to win the game. The Lions opened a 14-6 lead in set No. 2, but the Cowboys closed the gap to 14-10, highlighted by kills from junior setter Autumn Dzierzon and senior outside hitter Jessy Davis. However, they didn’t get any closer, and the Lions finished off the set at 25-15.
Things didn’t change in set No. 3. Payson wrapped up the win with a 25-13 score, but the Cowboys did have some highlights. Junior libero Angel Cloward aced a serve, and Davis had a tough-angled kill to make the score 2-1. Davis hit the ball from the right side of the net, and the ball went to Payson’s right side and landed for a point. Sandberg also had a kill from a soft tap over the net.
The two teams traded the lead in the third set before Payson got the 25-22 win. The Lions scored the first two points before giving the ball back, and then got it right back at 3-1. Davis pounded the ball on the next point to make the score 3-2.
The Lions and Cowboys went back and forth until finally the Cowboys evened the score at 6-6. Payson scored the next three before giving the ball back, and Sandberg delivered an ace to make the score 9-8. Then, Davis softly tapped the ball over on the next play for a kill to even the score at 9-9. The Cowboys got their first lead of the set thanks to a net violation on Payson on the ensuing play. The Cowboys scored another point, and then the Lions picked up the pressure. They scored the next five points for a 14-11 lead.
Senior middle Lisa Sandberg put an end to the run with a kill at 14-12.
Again, they went back and forth until Grantsville evened the score at 16-16. Dzierzon once again gave Grantsville the lead with an ace at 17-16. Finally, the score was even at 22, and that’s when the Lions pulled away from the Cowboys.
Sarah Sandberg served the ball into the net to give Payson the lead, and that would be the last lead change of the set. Payson’s Amy Pouliot served an ace, followed by a serve that hit off Cloward to wrap up the victory.
The Lions face Waterford Tuesday before traveling to face Juan Diego Thursday. Region play then starts Sept. 19.
