Police told me to

One recent Saturday we found the gate to our backyard opened and a big dog that someone had abandoned. The dog was thin; we gave it water and he drank with gusto. My daughter-in-law gave him some food, which he ate with the same gusto. We wondered, who would do such a thing?

But wait, there’s more. My daughter-in-law called dispatch.  Hours later she received a call back, telling her that this was not a police matter, that animal control was closed and that she should let the dog run the streets.

Really? And what would happen if a police officer caught me doing so? What would I say? The police told me to do so?  In reality letting the dog loose like that would make me worse than the one who abandoned him in my backyard. But hey, that’s just me. What do I know?
