Rollover near Lake Point sends driver to hospital

A single-vehicle rollover early this morning resulted in the driver being taken by helicopter to a Salt Lake City hospital.

The vehicle was initially reported as a reckless driver on I-80 near milepost 102 at about 6:30 a.m. The reporting party followed the vehicle onto exit 99 to Lake Point, where the vehicle reportedly hit a barrier while taking the exit, according to Trooper Chris Lewis of the Utah Highway Patrol, who subsequently followed the vehicle.

Lewis said he saw the vehicle travel across both southbound lanes of SR-36 and then cross over to the west shoulder of the road. He turned on his emergency lights and sirens to direct the driver to pull over, he said.

“By that time, the vehicle was on the shoulder, fishtailing,” he said.

The vehicle rolled near a storage facility south of Lake Point, and came to rest on its wheels facing east. The driver, 45-year-old Mindy Pranno, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Lewis said Pranno was conscious and breathing when she was transported by helicopter to the University of Utah Hospital, but he has not received an update on her status.

Lewis said Pranno, whose address was in Erda, indicated she had taken pain medication before driving.

“While talking to her she stated she was taking some prescription medication for her back, so we’re under suspicion here for driving under the influence,” he said.

Because the rollover happened off the highway, Lewis said traffic was unaffected except for some slowdown caused by curious passing drivers.
