Roy Willis Whitehouse passed away at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 73 years old. Roy was born in Tooele on March 30, 1940 to Chester and LaRue Whitehouse. He was raised in Tooele and graduated from Tooele High School in 1958. In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Karlene McFarland. Together they have three children and nine grandchildren. Roy attended College of Southern Utah for two years where he played football and baseball. He then transferred to Utah State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He later earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah. From 1962-1972, Roy taught high school and coached various sports at Tooele High. In 1972, he became a probation officer for the Juvenile Court system. He then went on to serve as the Trial Court Executive for the State of Utah 3rd District Juvenile Court. He retired after 40 years of service. After retirement, Papa spent five years building Parker’s Park. The park was built in memory of his grandson, Parker Robert McIntyre, and was dedicated to the memory of all children who didn’t have the opportunity to play ball. His labor of love serves as a lasting legacy for his family and the citizens of Tooele City. Roy was an active civic leader. He served on the Tooele City Council for six years and as a Volunteer Firefighter for 46 years. He was involved in coaching youth sports where he influenced several generations of athletes. Papa enjoyed spending his evenings playing softball at the Erda ballpark for the Erda Softball Team. In his later years he played Senior Softball for The Good Ole’ Boys and participated in the Huntsman Senior Games until he was 70 years old. Roy was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and ride horses. Some of his fondest memories were times spent with his family and friends on the ball fields and in the mountains of Tooele County. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karlene; daughters Jill (Bob) McIntyre , Jeanne (Stephen) Manzione of Stansbury Park, son Bucky (Leslee) Whitehouse of Tooele; grandchildren Drew (Dabney), Abby, Matt and Mitchell McIntyre, Karlee and Gage Manzione, Rylee and Seth Whitehouse; brother Chet (JoAnn) Whitehouse of Denver; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Connie Reynolds, grandson Parker McIntyre. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. at the LDS Seventh Ward Chapel, 1000 W. Utah Ave. A viewing will be held Sunday, Sept. 29, from 6-8 p.m. at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main, Tooele, and at the church one hour prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Keeper of the Park Foundation at Heritage West Credit Union, Tooele, for the purpose of providing college scholarships to student-athletes in Tooele County. Interment will be at the Tooele City Cemetery.
