Sports Wrap – August 21, 2014

Endowment game

Tooele’s football game against Cyprus at home Friday night is an endowment game. Students will need to pay to attend the game. Prices: Adults $5, students $4, senior citizens $3, children under 5 free. Endowment games are revenue producers for the Utah High School Activities Association.

SHS girls soccer

Stansbury evened its record at 2-2 with a victory on Friday at North Sanpete and another win on Tuesday at home against Union. The Stallions led 2-1 at halftime at North Sanpete, and poured it on in the second half with three more goals to win 5-2. Michaela Didericksen scored three goals, and Rachel Prescott two in the road victory. Union was no match for the Stallions, who led  7-0 at intermission. Didericksen and Prescott combined for another five goals, while Katrina Clausing, Krystanne Idom and Sammy Howa each added a goal. Natalie Memmott recorded the shutout as goalkeeper. Stansbury continues preseason battles with a game at Taylorsville on Tuesday and at Payson on Thursday, Aug. 28.

GHS girls tennis

Grantsville picked up its second win of the season in girls tennis with a 4-2 victory at home over Mountain Crest on Tuesday. Grantsville’s Jen Christensen defeated Kylie Carlsen 6-3, 6-0 at first singles. Bailey Sandberg lost to Kristen Johnson 2-6, 6-7 (4-7). Morgan Matthews defeated Hannah White 6-2, 6-2. Madi Linares and Lexi Jackson lost a grueling three-setter at first doubles 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, while Becca Toone and Kayla Johnson won a three-setter 6-1, 4-6, 6-6-3 at second doubles. Samantha Rowbery and Maurisa Linares won 6-1, 6-4 at third doubles. Grantsville hosts Bear River on Tuesday, and plays at Ben Lomond on Thursday.

Ute  Conference fundraiser

Tooele, Grantsville, Stansbury and Highland Ute Conference football districts will host a day of youth football Saturday at Deseret Peak Complex as a fundraiser. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. with four games on four fields.  Games will continue throughout the day with 23 contests on the schedule. Cost is $4 for an adult, $3 for children 12 and younger and $15 for a family pass of 2 adults and up to 4 children.

Overlake championship

The deadline for signing up for the Overlake Club championship is Friday at noon. The big event is set for Saturday and Sunday. Entry fee is $85 which includes: 18 Holes with cart for both days and prize money. As always skins and contest holes will be additional to the entry fee. Players can play anytime on Saturday, but must play with at least one league member playing in the championship (please make your own tee time). Sunday tee times will begin at 9 a.m. with all participants being paired according to your Saturday score. All members who have paid their league dues are eligible to play in the club championship this year.

Accelerated softball

There will be tryouts for a 12U accelerated softball team on Aug. 27-28 at Deseret Peak Complex upper field. For more information contact Wayco Cowan 830-5190 or Steve Snow 775-224-2402.

Pro motocross race

Miller Motorsports Park will host the second annual Zions Bank Utah National and season finale for the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship series on Saturday. Practice sessions will get underway at 8:30 a.m., with consolation races at 11:35 a.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 12:25 p.m., followed by the first 450 moto at 1:05 p.m., the first 250 moto at 2:05 pm, the second 450 moto at 3:15 p.m. and the second 250 moto at 4:15 p.m. This year’s event will feature a revised 1.2-mile track, with better race flow, more passing opportunities and shorter lap times. In addition, the infield portion of the track has been opened to spectators for the first time, allowing more up-close-and-personal viewing of these incredible athletes. Also taking place on Saturday will be the Ultra4 American Rock Sports Challenge, a unique off-road race that takes place on both the Off-Road Short Course and the Rock-Crawling Course. The weekend’s activities will get underway on Friday, with the inaugural Rockwell Watches Amateur Motocross Showdown, which will attract amateur motocross riders from throughout the Intermountain West.  For ticket information visit  For additional information on the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, visit

Fishing report

The Division of Wildlife’s recent fishing report shows fair results at Vernon Reservoir, and slow fishing success at Grantsville and Settlement Canyon reservoirs.
