Grantsville girls soccer vs. Millard

Whitney Wangsgard scored five goals and assisted on teammate Alyssa Roberts’ tally as the Grantsville girls soccer team rolled to a 6-0 win over Millard in a non-region home game Tuesday afternoon. Wangsgard has 21 goals in just four matches this season, and 65 in 20 career varsity matches. Grantsville (4-0) wrapped up its preseason schedule Thursday after press time at home against St. Joseph. The Cowboys will travel to Kamas to face South Summit in their Region 13 opener Tuesday afternoon.

Grantsville volleyball at Mountain Crest

The Grantsville volleyball team defeated Mountain Crest 18-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday in Hyrum, improving the Cowboys’ preseason record to 8-6 heading into Thursday evening’s match at home against Bear River. Hannah Butler led the Cowboys with 15 kills, five blocks and 10 digs, while Paige Ford had 10 kills and three blocks, Halle Bartley had nine kills and four aces and Maison White added seven kills. Callie Killian had four blocks and 35 assists, August Cowan had 13 digs and Chloe Gowans and Hillary Cloward each had 10 digs. Grantsville will play host to St. Joseph next Wednesday. 

Stansbury girls soccer at Ben Lomond

Sophomore Reagan Didericksen scored three times and Maddy Graber added another goal to lead the Stansbury girls soccer team to a 4-1 win over Ben Lomond in a Region 11 game Wednesday in Ogden. The Stallions (3-5, 1-3 Region 11) snapped a five-game losing streak, during which they had been outscored 25-7. Stansbury will play host to Tooele next Thursday.

Tooele girls soccer at Park City

The Tooele girls soccer team fell 3-0 to Park City in a Region 11 road game Wednesday afternoon, keeping the young Buffaloes (1-5-1, 0-4 Region 11) winless in region play. The Buffs will look to get their ship righted Tuesday at home against Ben Lomond.

Stansbury volleyball vs. Taylorsville

The Stansbury volleyball team (5-4) defeated Taylorsville in four sets in a non-region match Wednesday at Stansbury High School. Statistics were not available at press time Thursday morning. The Stallions opened their Region 11 season Thursday after press time at home against Ben Lomond, and will travel to Park City on Tuesday.

Tooele Athletic Wall of Fame

Tooele High School is accepting applications for the Annual Athletic Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony, to be held Friday, Sept. 21. Applicants must have graduated from THS at least 10 years ago. Email Athletic Director Catham Beer at cbeer@tooeleschools.org for an application or pick one up at Tooele High School  (301 W. Vine St. Tooele, UT 84074).  Application is due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.

Salt Lake Bees

The Bees (70-64) opened their final homestand of the 2018 season with a pair of wins over the visiting Reno Aces on Tuesday and Wednesday at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City. Salt Lake won Wednesday’s game 4-3 in 10 innings on Matt Thaiss’ walk-off, bases-loaded single that drove in Stephen McGee from third base. McGee also had an RBI single and an RBI double for the Bees, while Jose Fernandez added a solo home run. On Tuesday, the Bees pounded out 17 hits on their way to a 10-6 win. Salt Lake’s offense got a boost from second-inning home runs by Jared Walsh, Jabari Blash and Alberto Triunfel. Blash and Bo Way had RBI singles and Triunfel had a run-scoring double as part of a four-run third inning, and Luis Rengifo had an RBI triple and Walsh had an RBI single in the eighth. The Bees wrapped up their series with the Aces on Thursday night after press time, and will conclude their season with a four-game series against Fresno beginning Friday.
