Grantsville boys basketball at Cyprus

The Grantsville boys basketball team was outscored 21-8 in the third quarter, turning a close game into a 15-point deficit on the way to a 70-59 loss to Class 6A Cyprus on Tuesday night in Magna. Davin Ekins led the Cowboys (1-2) with 23 points and Jackson Sandberg added 15. Tuhker Mulford had nine points for Grantsville. The Cowboys will take part in the 3A Preview this weekend in Richfield, facing Manti on Friday and South Sevier on Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center.

Tooele boys basketball at Wasatch Academy

Nationally ranked Wasatch Academy overwhelmed the Tooele boys basketball team 113-67 in a non-region game Tuesday night in Mount Pleasant. Canyon Christensen had a game-high 21 points for Tooele (1-1), while Justin Rogers added 14 points. Brandon Vorwaller chipped in eight points for the Buffaloes, who will play their first home game of the season Friday night against Springville.

Wendover boys basketball at Providence Hall

Jaime Montalvo’s 31-point performance, along with 22 more from Peter Alvarez, helped propel the Wendover boys basketball team to an 89-63 win over Providence Hall on Tuesday night in Herriman. Jaison Mendoza had 12 points and Saul Valle added 10 for the Wildcats (2-0), who hit 11 3-pointers – six from Montalvo. Wendover will take part in the Buffalo Classic at Valley High School in Orderville this weekend, beginning with a matchup with Tabiona on Friday afternoon. 

Dugway girls basketball at APA West Valley

The Dugway girls basketball team trailed 16-15 after the first quarter of Tuesday’s road game against APA West Valley, but managed just 13 points the rest of the way in a 51-28 loss. Paisley Smith had 14 points and McKenzie Thackeray added 10 for the Mustangs (0-2), with Jaidyn Green scoring the team’s other four points. Dugway’s next game is Dec. 14 against Freedom Prep Academy, in a tournament hosted by Pinnacle Academy in Price.

Dugway boys basketball vs. Utah School for the Deaf and Blind

The Dugway boys basketball team raced out to a 31-6 first-quarter lead and cruised to a 79-35 win over USDB in a non-region game Wednesday night at Dugway High School. Kota Bear and Seth Ryan each had 20 points for the Mustangs (1-1), who also got 13 points from Cahil Munn. Dugway’s next game is Friday in Manila against Hayden (Colo.), with additional games Saturday against Rangely (Colo.) and Green River. 

Stansbury boys basketball vs. Summit Academy

Peyton Thevenot scored 23 points and Jaden Jenkins added 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as the Stansbury boys basketball team defeated Summit Academy 65-53 in a non-region game Wednesday night at Stansbury High School. Kaden Taylor had eight rebounds and Dave Spaulding added seven for the Stallions (3-0), while Jenkins had five steals and Thevenot had four. Stansbury will face Timpview in its first road game of the season Friday in Provo.

Utah men’s basketball vs. BYU

The Utah men’s basketball team rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to force overtime, then pulled away in the extra frame for a 102-95 victory over in-state rival Brigham Young on Wednesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. Timmy Allen had 27 points and Rylan Jones added 25 for the Utes (6-2), with Mikael Jantunen adding 18 points and six rebounds off the bench. Riley Battin had 14 points for Utah. Yoeli Childs had 29 points for BYU (6-4) in his first game back from a nine-game suspension to start the season. Jake Toolson had 27 points and nine rebounds, Alex Barcello had 11 points and Dalton Nixon had 10 for the Cougars. Utah will play host to Central Arkansas on Saturday, while BYU will face UNLV at the Marriott Center in Provo on Saturday afternoon.

WSU men’s basketball at UVU

The Weber State men’s basketball team outscored Utah Valley 48-39 in the second half to defeat the Wolverines 72-67 on Wednesday night at the UCCU Center in Orem. Jerrick Harding erupted for 36 points to lead the Wildcats (2-5), and Tim Fuller contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. TJ Washington led UVU (4-6) with 18 points. Trey Woodbury had 14 points and Casdon Jardine had 10 for the Wolverines. Weber State will play host to Westcliff on Saturday at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, and Utah Valley will make the trip south on Interstate 15 to face Southern Utah at the America First Event Center in Cedar City on Saturday afternoon.

USU men’s basketball at
San José State

Justin Bean scored 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the 25th-ranked Utah State men’s basketball team to a 71-59 win over San José State in its Mountain West Conference opener Wednesday in San Jose, California. Sam Merrill added 14 points for the Aggies (8-1, 1-0 MWC), with Alphonso Anderson scoring 12 and Diogo Brito adding 10. Utah State had 16 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over just seven times compared to the Spartans’ six offensive rebounds and 15 turnovers. The Aggies’ next game is Saturday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan against Fresno State.
