Academic All-State
Six local athletes have been named Academic All-State for the winter sports season. Grantsville basketball player Skyler Cloward and Stanbury basketball player Karlee Manzione both received their second Academic All-State awards for the year. Cloward also earned the honor for football and Manzione for tennis. Also earning the award were McKenzie Alvarez of Tooele for basketball, Sarah Thomas of Stansbury for drill team, Kyle Flecther and Brianna Bolton of Tooele for swimming.
Palmer places second
Former Tooele High School golfer Sadie Palmer of Southern Utah University tied for second at the Lumberjack at Ocotillo golf tournament Wednesday in Chandler, Ariz. Palmer fired a three-day total of 227 two shots behind tourney winner Kelsey Haynie of McNeese State. The T-Birds’ next tourney is the Red Rocks Invitational on March 2-3 in Sedona, Ariz.
Chandler Staley signs
Former Stansbury High School football player Chandler Staley signed a letter-of-intent to play for Benedictine College next fall. Benedictine is located in Atchinson, Kan.
Tooele softball camp
Tooele High School will hold its annual All-Skills softball camp for girls ages 8 to 14 on Saturday, March 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Deseret Peak Softball Complex. Cost for the camp is $40, which includes T-shirt and lunch. Players can register at the Tooele High School finance with a deadline of Feb. 22.
County softball
Tooele County Girls Softball is holding sign-ups on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Big 5 from noon to 3 p.m., and at the Dow James Complex from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. More sign-ups will be held Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Dow James Complex from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registration information can be found on the league’s website at www.tcgsoftball.org.
Grantsville softball
Grantsville Girls Softball sign-ups ups will be every Saturday through March 2. Sessions will be held at Grantsville Jr. High, Grantsville High School and also in Stansbury at Soelberg’s from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A player’s birth certificate is needed to register. Cost is $50.
Wendover girls basketball
Wendover lost in the first round of the 1A state basketball tournament to Monticello 37-26 and will play against Panguitch today. The three top scorers in the game for the Wildcats were Jessica Cuevas 7, Aurora Rodgriguez 6 and Stephanie Badillo with 6.
Wasatch Back registration
Additional team spots are now available to participate on Thursday, June 2 through Friday June 21. This new Thursday-Friday running format is the first of its kind and will allow runners to participate in the original Ragnar Relay Event and still have time to enjoy the weekend in Park City. Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz took control in the second quarter and held on to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves Wednesday night in Minneapolis 97-93. It was a second big win for the Jazz who defeated Oklahoma City Tuesday night at EnergySolutions Arena 109-94. Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson combined for 41 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Jazz. The NBA All-Star game is set for 6 p.m. on Sunday in Houston.
Slam dunk contest
Utah Jazz forward Jeremy Evans will defend his title in the 2013 Sprite Slam Dunk on Saturday at Toyota Center in Houston during NBA All-Star weekend. The Slam Dunk airs live on TNT at 6 p.m. as part of All-Star Saturday Night.“It is very exciting to have the opportunity to participate, not just for the first time, but to be able to go back for a second time,” said Jeremy Evans. “I want to top what I did last year and come out and try to win it again.”
College basketball
The University of Utah defeated Arizona State Wednesday night in the Huntsman Cetner 60-55. Utah led 29-22 at intermission and held on to the lead. Jason Washburn tied a career high with 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting and Utah avenged a 55-54 overtime loss to ASU in Tempe on Jan. 2. The Utes host No. 9 Arizona on Saturday at 1 p.m. BYU hosts Portland Saturday in the Marriott Center, while Utah State hosts Denver tonight at 7 and New Mexico State Saturday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. Weber State hosts Montana tonight at 7 at the Dee Events Center with a home game against Montana State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
