Tooele girls basketball
vs. Juan Diego

The Tooele girls basketball team fought its way back from an early deficit and overcame a 4-of-16 effort from the free-throw line to top Juan Diego 37-36 on Tuesday night, giving the Buffaloes a much-needed win on Senior Night. Emily Webber led the Buffs with 16 points, and fellow senior Shaylie Davis added eight. The victory gave Tooele a shot at the Region 11 championship going into Thursday night’s regular-season finale at Bonneville, a game that was not complete at press time. If the Buffs beat the Lakers by five points or more, it would give Tooele the No. 1 seed from Region 11 going into the Class 4A state tournament. If the Buffs (13-7, 9-2 Region 11) beat Bonneville by four points, a coin flip would be required to determine the No. 1 seed because Bonneville defeated Tooele by four points earlier in the season. A Tooele win by three points or fewer would give the Lakers the No. 1 seed. A Tooele loss paired with a Stansbury win over Ogden would drop the Buffs into third place in the region standings and would force them to go on the road for the first round of the playoffs.

Wendover boys basketball
at Dugway

Jason Shepherd had 24 points and Brayan Mendoza added 23 to lead the Wendover boys basketball team to an 89-45 win on the road over Tooele County rival Dugway in a Region 21 game Wednesday night,. Monico Guerrero had 12 points and Gustavo Carrillo added 10 for the Wildcats (18-3, 7-1 Region 21), who face Tintic in a crucial home game with region title implications Friday night. Jake Whalen had 16 points and Jesus Valdiviezo had 14 for Dugway (7-11, 1-7), which has lost seven straight and travels to Milford on Friday.

Tooele boys basketball
vs. Juan Diego

For the second time this season, the Tooele boys basketball team hung tough with Region 11 powerhouse Juan Diego, but the Buffaloes couldn’t quite pull off the win, falling 65-56 to the Soaring Eagle in Tooele’s regular-season home finale Tuesday night. Nathan Swan led Tooele (10-8, 8-3 Region 11) with 16 points, while Mitchell Bunn had 10 and Dawson Banks and Kyler Hymas each scored nine. Matt Kitzman had 26 points for Juan Diego (19-4, 12-0). Tooele will travel to Washington Terrace to take on Bonneville in the regular-season finale Friday night. A win or a Stansbury loss would clinch second place in the Region 11 standings for Tooele, as well as a home game in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. A loss and a Stansbury win over Ogden would drop Tooele to third place and would give Stansbury the right to host a first-round game.
