3A Swim Meet

The Tooele girls swim team achieved its goal of finishing in the top five at the 3A State Swim Meet Friday and Saturday at BYU. The THS girls scored 136 points at the meet, just two points behind fourth place Dixie. Park City won the girls state title with 517.5 points followed by Desert Hills 280 and Cedar 212.5. Stansbury finished 11th in girls competition with 78.5 points, and Grantsville placed 16th with 30 points. In boys competition, Tooele finished ninth with 91 points, Grantsville 10th with 71 points and Stansbury 11th with 63 points. “The team did about what I expected. We wanted a top five finish for the girls and the boys to be in the top 10,” said THS coach Mel Roberts. “We have a team with a lot of pretty good swimmers, but not great ones. They fought and scratched for every point.” Stansbury’s Garrett Hillman shined at the meet with a second place finish in the 500 freestyle, and a third place finish in the 200 freestyle. Grantsville’s Tanner Higley placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Tooele sophomore Cassidy Evans placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke. A complete story of local finishes at the state meet will appear in Thursday’s Transcript-Bulletin.
