Sports Wrap – February 26, 2013

Youth baseball camp

The Tooele High School baseball team is sponsoring a youth clinic. The dates of the clinic are March 2, March 16 and March 23. Kindergarten through fourth graders will practice from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., while fifth through eighth graders will practice from noon to 1:30 p.m. The clinic will be held at the Dow James Baseball Field. In case of inclement weather, go to the THS gym. The cost of the clinic is $30 and includes a camp T-shirt. You can register the day of the camp, or you may call the THS finance office at (435) 833-1978 ext. 2106 to pre-register. Please call Coach Beer at (435) 830-8190 if you have any questions.

THS Fund Run

The Tooele High School track teams will hold their annual THS Track 5K Fund Run on Saturday, March 9 at 9 a.m. at Elton Park. Everyone is invited to come and support the THS track team by walking or running in the event. Cost is $15 and each participant will receive a T-shirt. This is an easy downhill 3.1 mile run from the gun club to Elton Park. Deseret Peak softball

Registration is now open for the 2013 men’s and coed leagues. The fee is $425 per team and must be paid by April 24. Cash or check payments can be made at the convention center office at Deseret Peak or by credit card over the phone by calling Chris at 843-4003. Any questions regarding the leagues contact Jeff at 840-1735.

Grantsville softball

The final Grantsville Girls Softball sign-up session will be Saturday at Grantsville Jr. High, Grantsville High School and also in Stansbury at Soelberg’s from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A player’s birth certificate is needed to register. Cost is $50.

Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz (31-26) lost a 110-107 heartbreaker in overtime Monday night at home to the Boston Celtics (30-27). Paul Pierce led Boston with 27 points and scored seven straight in overtime. Boston led 80-72 after three quarters, but the Jazz came back to take the lead at 83-82 on a basket from Enes Canter. The teams finished tied at 97 after regulation. Utah grabbed a 101-99 lead in OT on a DeMarre Carroll jumper and then Pierce knocked down a 3-pointer to give his team a lead they would never relinquish. Gordon Hayward came off the bench to pour in 26 points for the Jazz in the OT loss. Al Jefferson led in rebounding with 11 boards. Utah hosts Atlanta (32-23) on Wednesday and Charlotte (13-43) on Friday

College basketball

No. 2 Gonzaga (27-2, 14-0) will play at BYU (20-9, 9-5) Thursday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Last week, the Cougars edged Utah State (19-7, 9-5) 70-68 and lost to Saint Mary’s (24-5, 12-2) on the road 64-57. The Aggies also play a big game Thursday when they travel to No. 25 Louisiana Tech (24-3, 14-0). Utah State defeated Illinois State (16-13, 7-9) on Saturday 80-71. The University of Utah (11-15, 3-11) plays at Cal (18-9, 10-5) Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. Weber State (20-5, 14-2) will look to extend a seven-game winning streak with a game at Sacramento State (13-12, 7-9) on Thursday at 8 p.m. The Wildcats picked up a non-conference win on Saturday at Oral Roberts (17-11, 12-3) 70-66. The Southern Utah Thunderbirds (11-15, 8-8) defeated Cal State Northridge (13-15, 4-11) Saturday 73-72. The T-Birds host Montana State Thursday at 7 p.m. Utah Valley University (13-15, 2-5) plays at North Dakota State (11-4, 20-8) tonight after losing at Houston Baptist (12-14, 3-3) on Saturday.

Utah Grizzlies

The Colorado Eagles defeated the Utah Grizzlies 4-1 Sunday at the Budweiser Events Center. Both teams skated shorthanded due to injuries and suspensions with Utah dressing 11 skaters and finishing with nine and Colorado dressing 13 skaters and finishing with 12. Utah returns home tonight to San Francisco at 7 p.m. at the Maverik Center and plays at Idaho on Wednesday night. Utah is in fourth place in the Mountain Division of Western Conference of the East Coast Hockey League.
