THS soccer tryouts

The Tooele High School soccer team will hold tryouts at 3 p.m. on Feb. 27-28 at the school’s soccer fields. All hopefuls are required to bring soccer cleats, a T-shirt or jersey, shorts, soccer socks, shin guards, water, a rain jacket if preferred and a pumped-up size 5 soccer ball. Tooele Fund Run

The 2017 Tooele Fund Run 5k/10k will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 4. Registration and check-ins will be held at the LakeView LDS meetinghouse beginning at 7:30 a.m. The race course has been changed slightly for this year’s event: Both races will begin on Old Smelter Highway, below the Tooele Gun Club, and finish at the Lakeview LDS Church Building in Pine Canyon. The entry fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt. Prizes will be given to the top-three finishers in the male and female races. Participants will be shuttled from the registration site to the starting line. Sign up early by contacting any Tooele High School track athletes or coaches. Utah Jazz

The Jazz beat Washington 102-92 on Sunday thanks to 30 points from forward Gordon Hayward. Utah is now 37-22 and in fourth place of the Western Conference.

Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake announced the club has signed forward Joao Plata to a new multi-year contract, adding to a growing list of players under the age of 25 that have signed to long-term contracts in recent weeks. Plata will continue to occupy a Designated Player spot. “Any time you can make a long-term commitment between the player and the club on such a promising player with so much attacking ability, you never shy away from that opportunity. The timing was perfect to extend,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said. “He’s having a good time with RSL. He continues the mold we’ve created of solidifying a core group of players that can be here for a long time.” RSL will open the 2017 season agaisnt Toronto FC at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
