Grantsville basketball
The Grantsville boys basketball team lost 11th straight game Friday night in Ogden against the Ben Lomond Scots 44-27. The Cowboys scored a total of 16 points through the first three quarters while the Scots double them with 32 in the same time frame. Nine players scored points for the Cowboys with Devin Adams at 5, Caleb Edwards 4, Landon Hammond 4, Dallin Williams 3, Devin Arellano 3, Braydon Hamatake 2, Jake Riding 2, Shad East 2 and Skyler Cloward 2. Sage Eastburn led the Scots with 14 points while Corbin Medina knocked down three 3-point shots and scored 11. Adams and Arellano each hit a 3-pointer for the Cowboys. Grantsville hosts region leader Morgan on Wednesday and closes out the season at Ogden on Friday.
Mattie Snow
Former Tooele High School softball pitcher Mattie Snow was named Preseason Pitcher of the Year Thursday by Pacific West Conference coaches. The Dixie State junior recorded a 17-5 record last year as a sophomore with a 2.0 ERA and had 133 strikeouts. Dixie State starts the season on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Montana State University-Billings at Karl Brooks Field. Former Tooele High School softball players Lauren Folta and Kelsey Mendenhall concluded stellar careers at Dixie State last year.
Grantsville softball
Grantsville Girls softball sign-ups ups will be every Saturday starting Feb. 9 through March 2. Sessions will be held at Grantsville Jr. High, Grantsville High School and also in Stansbury at Soelberg’s from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A player’s birth certificate is needed to register. Cost is $50.
Tooele Ute Conference
A coaches meeting for the Tooele Ute Conference youth tackle football league will be held on Monday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Tooele County building at 47 South Main St. The main topic of discussion will be deciding on head coaches and assistant coaches for the upcoming 2013 season. 12U Super League baseball
The TC Bandits, a 12U baseball team, will be holding tryouts for the upcoming spring season. Players should be 12 or younger on April 30, 2013 to participate. Accelerated softball
A 10U accelerated girls softball league is looking for players from Tooele County who are interested in playing in a league that will be playing at the South Jordan Softball complex on Friday nights starting in April and playing at various softball tournaments after league play is over up to June 30. Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz defeated the Sacramento Kings 98-91 Monday night in overtime at EnergySolutions Arena. Randy Foye led Utah with 20 points, including 6 in overtime, for the Jazz win. Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, Derrick Favors, DeMarre Carroll and Alec Burks all scored in double figures for the Jazz. Jason Thompson and Tyreke Evans scored 23 and 20 respectively for the Kings. Former BYU player Jimmer Fredette played a lackluster 13 minutes missing all five of his shots from the field while making two foul shots. The Jazz host Milwaukee on Wednesday, Chicago on Friday and then have a re-match with the Kings Saturday night in Sacramento.
College basketball
The University of Utah (10-11, 2-7) honored former coach Rick Majerus Saturday at the Huntsman Center and came through with a 58-55 victory over California. BYU (18-6, 8-2) came from behind to defeat Pepperdine 63-61 in Malibu, Calif. Thursday night. On Saturday, the Cougars defeated Santa Clara in Provo 96-79. Utah State (16-5, 7-4) won a pair of road games with a 77-67 victory at Idaho on Thursday and a 68-46 triumph at Seattle on Saturday. Weber State (15-5, 10-2) also picked up a pair of road wins with a 66-51 victory at North Dakota on Thursday and an 85-64 win at Northern Colorado on Saturday.

Applications to hunt big game animals in Utah went on sale Friday. Everything hunters need to know to apply for a permit is available in the 2013 Utah Big Game Application Guidebook. Hunters can get the free guidebook online at Division of Wildlife Resources offices and from more than 300 hunting and fishing license agents across Utah.
