Steve Hodson tourney

The Stansbury boys basketball team was the lone Tooele County team to win on the first day of the Steve Hodson Classic. The Stallions defeated Juab 62-45 on Thursday. Nine players scored for the Stallions with Tom Griffith leading the way with 16 points and Niko Chacon adding 13 points. Park City boys defeated Grantsville 35-34 and Delta defeated Tooele 58-46. In girls action, Cedar downed Grantsville 64-13. A complete story of the Steve Hodson Classic will appear in the Jan. 3 edition of the Transcript-Bulletin.

Accelerated softball

A 10U accelerated girls softball league is looking for players from Tooele County who are interested in playing in a league that will be playing at the South Jordan Softball complex on Friday nights starting in April and playing at various softball tournaments after league play is over up to June 30. Practices will begin Jan. 7, 2013. Players must have been born in 2002. If interested please contact Glenda Bender (435) 882-8375.

Racquetball tourney

The FMWR racquetball tournament is scheduled to begin in late January. Categories will include men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. The deadline to register for the tournament is Jan. 18. The tournament is open to the public. Call TEAD FMWR Physical Fitness Center at (435) 833-2159 to register.

Volleyball league

The 2013 FMWR Adult Coed Volleyball League will begin on Jan. 22. Deadline to sign up is Jan. 14 and the program is open to the public. Entry fee is $100 per team for non-depot teams. Register and sign up at Building 1002, or call 2159 and register over the phone with a credit card. Teams can compete in the recreational league on Tuesday nights, the competitive league on Thursday nights, or both. Players must be 18 years of age or older and out of high school to play in the league. For more information call (435) 833-2159.

BCS bowl games

BCS bowl games start on Tuesday, Jan. 1 with the Rose Bowl pitting Wisconsin and Stanford at 3 p.m. The Orange Bowl is slated for Jan. 1 at 6:30 p.m. with Northern Illinois versus Florida State. BCS games continue on Wednesday, Jan. 2 with the Sugar Bowl which matches Louisville versus Florida at 6:30 p.m. The Fiesta Bowl is set for Friday, Jan. 3 with Oregon against Kansas Sate at 6:30 p.m. The BCS National Championship game will be held on Monday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in Miami at Sun Life Stadium pitting the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame against the Crimson Tide of Alabama.

Miller Motorsports Park

With the recent announcement that the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, will be coming to Miller Motorsports Park on Aug. 17, 2013, the remainder of the track’s 2013 schedule has now been finalized and season passes are now on sale. The 2013 schedule will be quite a bit different from recent years, with the first major event of the season not taking place until late June and a jam-packed schedule throughout August and September, but track officials are pleased with the number and variety of events planned. The first major event will be the fourth annual visit by the popular Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, which will return on the weekend of June 22-23. The series will compete on the high-speed Off Road Short Course, and its high-flying, door-banging excitement has proven to be extremely popular with Utah fans. August will be the big month for motorcycle racing enthusiasts, kicking off with the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing series on Aug. 3-4, featuring four different championships — the National Guard SuperBike Championship, GoPro Daytona SportBike Championship, Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport Championship and the Vance & Hines XR1200 Championship. Two weeks later, on Aug. 17, the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will make its first appearance in Utah since 1973, racing on a brand-new, purpose-built, national-caliber track located in the infield of the main road racing track at Miller Motorsports Park. The final major event of the season will take place over the weekend of Sept. 14-15, as the Utah Grand Prix returns with the seventh annual appearance by the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.
