Delta raced out to a 31-19 first half lead and held on for a 69-56 victory over Stansbury Friday night in Delta. Gage Manzione led the Stallions in both scoring and rebounds with 17 points and 11 boards. Taylor Graves added 14 points with two 3-pointers. Stansbury finishes the non-region schedule with a 7-6 record, and will open Region 11 play on Friday at Tooele.
SHS girls basketball
The Stansbury girls led 14-12 after one quarter, but Delta regrouped and went on to defeat the Lady Stallions 59-44 Friday night in Delta. Rachel Prescott and Shyan Adams both hit double figures in scoring with 14 for Prescott and 11 for Adams. Madie Alvey scored eight and Bailey Wilson seven. Stansbury opens league play on Tuesday at home against Ben Lomond and will play at rival Tooele on Thursday.
Tryouts for a 14U accelerated girls softball team will be held Monday, Jan. 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Clarke N. Johnsen Junior High School gymnasium in Tooele. The team has spots for five or six girls. For additional information, call 435 496-0972.
Tooele Valley Chariot Club raced for the third week on Saturday. The results were Rowdy Friends No. 1 over Rowdy No. 3; Rowdy No. 2 over Fox’s; Rowdy No. 4 over Critchlow No. 2; and Critchlow No. 1 over
Nobody and Rowdy No. 5. Racing will continue on Saturdays, Jan. 18, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. The public is invited to watch the races.
TC United will be accepting applications for the spring soccer season. Registration begins Jan. 15 through Feb. 17. Please check the website www.tcunited.org for registration information.
The 13th Annual Deseret Peak 3D Shoot will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 19 at the Deseret Peak Complex Indoor Arena. There will be 25 targets and shooters get two arrows per target. There will be a $40 competitive money shoot, and a $20 non-competitive fun shoot. The shoot is sponsored by the Stansbury Oquirrh Bowmen.
The 2014 TEAD Adult Coed Volleyball League will begin play on Jan. 28. Deadline to sign up is Jan. 14. The program is open to the Tooele County Community. Entry fee is $150 per team. The Utah Jazz hit the road this week for three games at San Antonio Wednesday, at Detroit Friday and at Minnesota Saturday. The Jazz lost to Cleveland 113-102 on Friday and defeated Denver 118-103 on Monday. Alec Burks scored a career-high 34 points to spark Utah to the win over the Nuggets. Derrick Favors added 19 points and 15 rebounds while Trey Burke had 18 points for the Jazz, who won their fifth game in the last six home starts.
Washington State (8-8) held off Utah (12-4) Sunday night in a Pac-12 game at Pullman, Wash. The Cougars came back from a 12-point deficit for their first Pac-12 win. Jordan Loveridge led the way for the Utes with 15 points while Delon Wright snagged seven rebounds. Utah hosts USC (9-7) on Thursday and UCLA (13-3) on Saturday.
Utah State men’s basketball struggled shooting the ball and suffered a 62-54 loss at Nevada Saturday evening at the Lawlor Events Center. USU is 11-4 overall and 1-2 in Mountain West play, while Nevada remains atop the league standings with a 4-0 conference mark, improving to 9-8 overall. Senior center Jarred Shaw led USU with 19 points, adding eight rebounds, but was the only player in double-figures. Sophomore forward Kyle Davis added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds, while senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield tallied seven points and seven rebounds.
