Grantsville baseball

Grantsville Youth Baseball will be holding registration for spring baseball each Saturday in February from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both Grantsville High School and Grantsville Junior High School. Players can also register at http://grantsvillebaseball.baberuthonline.com.

Grantsville softball

A Grantsville Girls Softball Recreation League meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 3, at Grantsville Fire Station. The meeting will include nominating executive committee members, setting dates for the upcoming season and resolving any issues. For more info www.grantsvillesoftball.com.

Youth soccer

TC United will be accepting applications for the spring soccer season. Registration begins now through Feb. 17. Please check the website www.tcunited.org for registration information.

Stansbury baseball

Stansbury Park Youth Baseball will hold registrations sessions for players and coaches on Saturdays, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. until noon. Another registration session will be held Saturday, Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign-ups will be held in the Stansbury Park Club House.

Accelerated softball

An accelerated 10U softball team will be holding tryouts on Feb. 8 at Deseret Peak Complex indoor arena from 10 a.m. until noon. The team is looking for motivated and talent-driven girls who were born in 2003 and 2004 to play the spring and summer season. For more information contact detonationsoftball@gmail.com.

USA selects Hayward

USA Basketball announced Thursday that Utah Jazz guard/forward Gordon Hayward has been selected to the initial 2014-2016 USA Men’s National Team roster, from which the 2014 USA World Championship Team and, if the U.S. qualifies, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team will be chosen. Hayward is one of 10 players named who participated this past July in the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s National team mini-camp, and he is one of six selected players who were part of the 2012 USA Select Team that trained against the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. Hayward also helped lead Team USA to a 9-0 record and a gold medal in the 2009 U19 World Championship in New Zealand.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz (14-29) host Washington (20-21) on Saturday and Sacramento (15-26) on Monday.

USU basketball

Utah State men’s basketball suffered a 62-42 loss at UNLV Wednesday night on Tarkanian Court at Thomas & Mack Center. USU is now 12-6 overall and 2-4 in Mountain West action, being dealt back-to-back losses for just the second time this season, falling to 3-2 this season following a loss and 77-30 during the last 14 years. The Aggies are also 2-4 on the road, having lost its last four after starting road play 2-0. UNLV improved to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in MW play, winning its first league home game this season. Utah State (12-6, 2-4)  hosts seventh-ranked San Diego State (17-1, 6-0) on Saturday.

Utah Utes

The Utes (14-4, 3-3)  will get a chance to see how they fare against the top team in the country this week when they play at Arizona (18-0, 5-0) on Sunday. The game will be televised by ESPN2 at 7 p.m. Utah plays at Arizona State on Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.

BYU basketball

The Cougars play two more games on the road this week at Portland (11-8, 3-4) on Thursday and at Gonzaga (16-3, 6-1) on Saturday. BYU (13-7, 5-2) has won five in a row after losing four in a row. The Portland game is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ROOT TV, and the Gonzaga game is set for  8 p.m. on ESPNU.

Big game permits

If you’re among the thousands of hunters who enjoy hunting big game animals in Utah, it’s time to get ready for this fall. The hunts are months away, but the time to apply for a permit is almost here. Applications to hunt big game animals in Utah will be accepted starting Jan. 30.
