Sports Wrap – March 11, 2014

Softball Food Drive

The Tooele and Grantsville high school softball teams are currently holding a food drive for the Tooele County Food Bank. Boxes are placed at both schools for food items to be donated. On Saturday, March 22, the two teams will take the boxes with the donated items to the food bank.

Stansbury Boys Soccer

The Stansbury Stallions are off to a 2-1 start after games on Saturday and Monday. The Stallions blasted Union 8-1 in a home game Saturday. They then lost on the road at Logan on Monday 4-2. The Stallions play on the road at Beaver on Thursday, and they return home to start region play Tuesday, March 18. Their next home game won’t be until Friday, March 21 when they host Grantsville.

Wendover Basketball

Wendover basketball’s dream season came to an end in the quarterfinals at the 1A state basketball tournament. The Wildcats suffered a 75-52 loss to Duchesne in the quarterfinals. Duchesne lost in the semifinals to eventual state champion Monticello. Duchesne opened with a 39-15 lead at halftime, and the Wildcats couldn’t recover from that. Wendover won its first round matchup with Telos 56-51 to earn a chance to play against Duchesne. Following the quarterfinals loss, Wendover then lost in the consolation bracket to Piute 77-52.

THS 5k Fund Run

The public is invited to walk or run in the annual 5k Fund Run Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m. at Elton Park. Cost is $20 per entrant with proceeds to the Tooele High School track program. T-shirts will be given to everyone who enters. This is an easy 3.1-mile run. The start is at the Tooele Gun Club and runs downhill to Elton Park. Register early by contacting any of the coaches or athletes, or on the day of race at the park. Shuttle service is provided to the top of the course. THS Baseball Skills Clinic

The Tooele High School baseball team will do its skills clinic on Saturday, March 15 and March 22. The clinic will be held at Dow James Field. Clinic times are 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (for students in grades kindergarten to fourth) and noon to 1:30 p.m. (for students in grades fifth to eighth). The cost is $25 with a T-shirt or $20 without. Jazz lose close one to Atlanta

Former Utah Jazz players Kyle Korver and Paul Millsap lit up the scoreboard with 26 and 23 points, respectively, and the Hawks came away with a 112-110 victory Monday night. The Jazz (22-42) scored 10 points in the final 16 seconds after trailing 109-100, but they just fell short. The Jazz trailed by 17 at one point, but they came back and even led 96-93 late in the game. However, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to grab the lead back and pull away for the win. The Jazz next host the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

BYU hangs on

The BYU Cougars (23-10) held off the surging San Francisco Dons in the West Coast Conference semifinals Monday 79-77 in overtime. Tyler Haws scored 24 points on only 5-of-19 shooting, but he made all 14 of his free throw attempts. With the win BYU will now face Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN. BYU and Gonzaga split during the regular season with each team winning at home. This is BYU’s first ever appearance in the WCC Tournament championship game.

Utah Utes

The Utah Utes open the Pac-12 Conference Tournament in Las Vegas on Wednesday against the Washington Huskies. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will face the No. 1 seed Arizona on Thursday.

Utah State Aggies

The Utah State Aggies play in the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Wednesday in Las Vegas against the Colorado State Aggies. USU enters that game as the No. 8 seed. The winner will face San Diego State on Thursday.

Utah Valley Wolverines

The Utah Valley Wolverines earned the No. 1 seed in the Western Athletic Conference and will play against the No. 8 seed Texas-Pan American. The tournament in Las Vegas starts Thursday.
