Sports Wrap – March 28, 2013

Grantsville baseball

The Cowboys picked up their second Region 11 victory with a 12-0 win at Ben Lomond on Tuesday. The Cowboys host Bear River today and play at Hunter on Saturday.

Grantsville softball

The Grantsville softball team picked up its third shutout of the season Wednesday with a 17-0 victory at Ben Lomond. The Cowboys recorded 16 hits and scored five runs in the first and 12 in the third. Pitcher Sydney Barney allowed one hit in three innings, and Amy Matthews popped two home runs. Grantsville hosts Bear River on Friday.

Stansbury softball

The Stallions defeated Alta 5-1 on Tuesday at Stansbury. Katelyn Robinson picked up the victory in the circle for the Stallions. Stansbury belted eight hits in the game with Karlee Manzione pounding a double. Stansbury hosts Syracuse today and plays at Ogden on Friday. The Stallions host Tooele on Tuesday.

Grantsville tennis

The Cowboys defeated Morgan 4-1 on Tuesday with two victories in singles and two victories in doubles. First singles Braden Sandberg won 6-0, 6-2. Second singles player Tyler Colson came from being down 3-0 in the third set to force a tiebreaker and was down 5-4 in the tiebreaker and won 7-5. Final score for the match was 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) for Colson. Devin Orgill and Tanner Elsholz prevailed at first doubles 6-3, 6-1; Dallin Dalton and Lane Sutton won a second doubles 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Tooele tennis

The Buffaloes shut out Cyprus 5-0 in a match on Tuesday. Tooele was missing their number one player due to a vacation to Hawaii. Ivan Hernandez stepped right in and defeated Cyprus’ No. 1 player easily. Hernandez won 6-0, 6-1. Ivan Gonzales and Kole Carberry both won matches 6-0, 6-0. Abraham Hernandez and Jacob Nielson won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles; Josh Orton and Jacob Vanderwerken won at second singles 6-1, 6-1. Tooele plays at Stansbury today.

Stansbury tennis

The Stallions improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Bear River on Tuesday by winning all three singles matches. Third singles Jake Harris picked up a big victory with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win. Coach Jacob Jones said Harris played aggressive tennis to win the tiebreaker. Logan McBride picked up the victory at first singles 6-2, 6-1, and Jake Hardy won at second singles 6-1, 6-2. Stansbury’s first doubles team lost in three sets 1-6, 7-5, 5-7. The second doubles team lost 3-6, 2-6. Stansbury hosts Tooele today.

Region 11 girls golf

Stansbury finished third, Tooele fifth and Grantsville seventh at a Region 11 golf match March 21 at Overlake. Morgan won the meet with 386 followed closely by Ogden at 387. The Stallions fired 410 for third place , Bear River shot 414, Tooele 431, Ben Lomond 484 and Grantsville 547. Tooele’s Paige Christensen led the Buffaloes with a low round of 90, and Stansbury’s Koralle Kaufman also shot below 100 with a 91.

NRA banquet

The Tooele County Friends of NRA will hold their annual banquet and auction on April 19, at the Eagle’s Nest. Doors open at 5 p.m. Pre-event drawing tickets and gun table packages are available. Prime rib dinner will be served. Drawings, games, silent and live auctions raise funds to support national, state and local shooting sports and firearm safety programs. Tooele football

There will be an informational player-parent meeting for all those interested in playing football at Tooele High School next year. The meeting will cover the summer schedule, fees and other important information regarding football next season. The meeting will be held tonight 6 p.m. in the Tooele High School commons area.

THS softball camp

Tooele High School will hold its annual All-Skills softball camp for girls ages 8 to 14 on Saturday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Deseret Peak Complex. Cost for the camp is $40, which includes T-shirt and lunch. Players can register at the Tooele High School finance office. Players can register until the morning of the camp. Overlake Golf

The Icebreaker tournament for Overlake men’s league is scheduled for Saturday, March 30. The format for this year’s Icebreaker is a two-man Ryder Cup (six holes scramble, six holes best ball, six holes alternate shot). Tee times will be between 10 a.m. and noon. League play will start on Tuesday, April 2.

Umpires needed

Grantsville youth baseball is looking for umpires for the 2013 season. Season starts April 13 and ends June 6. Ages involved are 6-12. The first game is a Saturday, and the rest of the games will be during the week. Email: grantsvillebaseball@gmail.com if interested.
