State golf tourney
Stansbury High School is tied for sixth place with Juan Diego after the first day of the 3A Boys State Golf Championship at Mountain Dell Golf Course. The Stallions’ top four players combined for 324 led by Trey Osterud who shot 75. Teammates Sam Babcock and Ryan Romero were not far behind Osterud. Babcock fired 77, and Romero shot 79. Tom Griffith carded 93 for the final score that counted. Tooele just beat the cutoff with 338 and will play Thursday after finishing 10th following Wednesday’s round. Jerzee Houston led the way with 76 followed by Braxton Quinn 82, Tristan Prather 89 and Braydon Boswell 91. Grantsville will not play on Thursday after shooting 388 on Wednesday. Leading the way for the Cowboys were Danny Nelson 90, Broston Schoell 91, Aaron Harrison 101 and Ty Willis 106. Park City, Desert Hills and Dixie are all in contention to win the state championship. The Miners shot 302, Thunder 303 and Flyers 306 after the first day. Snow Canyon is in fourth place at 319 followed by Uintah fifth at 322, Stansbury and Juan Diego 324 for sixth-seventh, Union and Bear River 330 for eighth-ninth, and Tooele 324 for 10th.
State tennis tourney
Grantsville, Stansbury and Tooele all have players competing at the 3A Girls State Tennis Tournament Friday and Saturday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The first and second rounds of the tournament will be held on Friday with action starting at 9 a.m. The semifinals and finals will be held Saturday with those matches starting at 9 a.m. Jennifer Christensen of Grantsville and Abby Nordgren of Stansbury will play in the first-singles bracket. Courtney James of Grantsville and Sydney Squires of Stansbury will play in the second-singles bracket. Maddie Linares of Grantsville and Clara Heder of Stansbury will play in the third singles bracket. Competing in the first-doubles bracket will be Morgan Matthews-Whitney Castagno, Grantsville; Kallie Stewart-Molly Johnson, Stansbury; and Makenna Bergen-Simone Thompson,Tooele. Second-doubles teams include Bailee Sandberg-Rebecca Toone, Grantsville; Rachel Rogers-Shelbie Warr, Stansbury; and Kelsie Jackson-Aubrey Vanderwerken, Tooele.
Game of the Week
Stansbury High School’s football game on Thursday at 7 p.m. will be televised on KMYU, sister station of KUTV. The game can be seen on Channel 2.2 over the air, Channel 12 on DISH and DIRECTV, and Channel 22 on COMCAST. The broadcast will repeat on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Signups for the Junior Buffs Basketball program for boys grades first-through-eighth will run now until Saturday, Oct. 26. Registration can be done in person at the Tooele High School finance office or Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. until noon in the Tooele High School Commons area. Six of the top 38 college football teams in the nation will play in Utah on Saturday, according to Jeff Sagarin’s College Football ratings. Stanford (8) will play at Utah (34), BYU (29) will host Georgia Tech (35) and Utah State (38) will host Boise State (36). The Utah-Stanford game will be televised on the PAC-12 Network with kickoff slated for 4 p.m. The BYU-Georgia Tech game will kick off at 5 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. Utah State and Boise State kick off at 6 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network. Saturday’s game marks the first time Utah and Stanford have played as PAC-12 members. Stanford leads the overall series 3-2 with Utah winning the most recent contest in 1996 at Stanford. Utah is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in PAC-12 action. Stanford is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in PAC-12 play. BYU (3-2) is 2-1 vs. Georgia Tech, after defeating the Yellow Jackets on the road last season 41-17. BYU is 7-13 against ACC opponents with the last victory coming against Georgia Tech. Former Grantsville High School quarterback Craig Harrison could get the starting nod for the Aggies against Boise State after starter Chuckie Keeton was injured against BYU and is out for the season. A starter will be announced on Saturday. Utah State is 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Boise State is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MWC.
