Stansbury’s first doubles team turned up the heat on opponents in St. George last weekend.
“Our first doubles team is really clicking right now. They have been playing extremely well,” said Stansbury coach Jacob Jones.
Stansbury faced some excellent competition last Friday and Saturday against 16 of the top tennis teams in the state at a tournament in St. George.
The Stallions picked up a solid win at the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Hurricane.
Skyline defeated Stansbury 4-1, Timpview defeated Stansbury 4-1 and Woods Cross beat the Stallions 4-1. Against Skyline and Woods Cross, it was the first doubles team of Kallie Stewart and Molly Johnson who helped the Stallions avoid being shut out. The first doubles team won both matches by large margins.
The lone victory for Stansbury against Timpview came at third singles where Clara Header won her match 8-2.
The Stansbury coach said it has taken a while, but the team continues to get better each season.
On Tuesday, Stansbury defeated Tooele 5-0.
First singles Abby Nordgren defeated Simone Thomsen 6-0, 6-2. Second singles Sydney Squires got past Makenna Bergen 6-3, 6-3, and third singles Danielle Dunn defeated Kaitlyn Breese 8-3, 6-3.
Stansbury’s Stewart and Johnson continued their hot streak at first doubles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Aubrey VanDerwerkin and Kelsie Jackson. Rachel Rogers and Shelbie Warr defeated Danielle Dobson and Shelbie Hickman 6-0, 6-2 at second doubles.
Grantsville 5, Ben Lomond 0
At Grantsville Tuesday, the Cowboys swept the Scots 5-0. Jennifer Christensen defeated Becca Windley 6-2, 6-4 at first singles, Maddie Linares won 7-5, 6-0 at second singles and Samantha Rowberry won 6-2, 6-2 at third singles.
The first doubles team of Morgan Matthews and Whitney Castagno won 6-3, 6-4 and the second doubles team of Bailey Sandberg and Becca Toone won 6-1, 6-0.
Grantsville played at Tooele Thursday, Sept. 19 and will host Stansbury Thursday, Sept. 24. The Stallions will host Cyprus Wednesday, Sept. 25. Tooele travels to Bear River on Thursday, Sept. 24.
