After a strong showing at the Region 10 tournament, Stansbury and Tooele will both be sending players on to the First Round of the 4A State Tournament. It will be held Thursday, Sept. 28 at Brighton High School. The state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30, at Liberty Park.
Stansbury qualified athletes in each of the classifications. Gabriela Bergantz (no. 16 seed) will represent the Stallions at 1st Singles, Meg Butler (no. 18 seed) at 2nd Singles, and Makaela Gibbons (no. 16 seed) at 3rd Singles.
In the Doubles competitions, Katelyn Gibbons and Sara Gibbons (no. 8 seed) will play 1st Doubles and Hannah Russell and Brooke Jensen (no. 4 seed) will compete at 2nd Doubles. Katelyn and Sara Gibbons and Russell/Jensen will commence play Friday because they received a bye into the second round.
Coming out of the Region 10 tournament, Tooele has five athletes who will advance to the first round: Elise McPhie (no. 22 seed) at 1st Singles, Cassie Johansen (no. 21 seed) at 2nd Singles, Mauri Kerr (no. 17 seed) playing 3rd Singles and Grace Young and Amber Resendez (no. 23 seed) representing the Buffaloes at 2nd Doubles.
Grantsville placed third in the Region 13 tournament with Rowland Hall claiming first and Morgan second. Freshman Mya Orgill won the Region 13 3rd Singles title. Afton Orgill placed second at 1st Singles, falling to Rowland Hall.
In 2nd Singles, Rylie McBride beat Morgan’s Sophie Rabe earlier in the tournament, but lost a close match to Rabe in the finals to place second as well. Both doubles teams took third with victories over Union. Brenna Johnson and Sarah Olney played 1st Doubles and Presley Jackson and Shelby McBride played 2nd Doubles.
