Stansbury’s Mascarenas finishes third

Stansbury finished in 14th place at the 3A state wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.

The Stallions scored 38.5 points right behind rival Tooele which placed 13th, and ahead of rival Grantsville which placed 18th with 12 points.

Leading the way for Stansbury was 138-pounder Marcellano Mascarenas who finished the meet with a 5-1 record. He scored 14 team points.

Mascarenas won in the opening round with a decision over an opponent from Cedar. The SHS senior lost a heartbreaker in the quarterfinal 4-3 to Juab’s Kolton Lynn, but came back in the consolation bracket to nab third place with 21- victory over Lynn in a rematch. To get to the third-place match, Mascarenas won three straight matches by decisions.

Grantsville’s Chance Warr (170) scored all of the Cowboys’ 12 points at the state match with a 4-2 record at the tournament. He finished fifth overall.

Warr  won over Dixie’s Brenr Nelson in the first round by a fall, but in the quarterfinals he lost his first to two heartbreakers. The first loss was a 5-4 decision to Desert Hills’ Ethan Del Toro who finished third at state. Warr won two decisions in the consolation bracket over two wrestlers from Uintah. He then lost in overtime to Dixie’s Stetson Jones in the consolation semifinal,  but beat Hurricane’s Brenston Moss in the fifth-pace match.

Stansbury’s Marty Johnson (220) also finished fifth at state, and scored 12.5 points for the Stallions. Mascarenas and Johnson combined to score 26.5 of Stansbury’s 38.5 points.

Johnson finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. He started out with a pin in the first round over a wrestler from Payson. He then lost to Tyler Stevenson of Desert Hills. Stevenson continued on to win the state championship. Johnson then won two matches over wrestlers from Dixie and Canyon View before losing a second match to a wrestler from Payson. Johnson came back to capture fifth place with a victory over a wrestler from Morgan.

Jalen Herrera (132) picked up four points for the Stallions with a 2-2 record at the tournament, and Easton Brown (182) scored three points with a 2-2 record. Nash Brown (126) also earned three points with a 2-2 record.

Gavin Skogg (113) scored two points with 2-1 record.

Other Stallions who competed at state included Josh Larsen (106), Logan Bowles (132), Nathan Spiker (145) and Nathan Hintze (285).

Other Grantsville wrestlers in the meet included Hunter Anderson (120), Brennon Kimber (126), Christopher Gunderson (138) and Dean Fraser (195).
